Willcox & Gibbs Automatic Chain Stitch Model 64 Chain Stitch Sewing Machine For Sale
Willcox & Gibbs Chainstitch Model # 64 Automatic sewing machine in uniquely preserved cosmetic and mechanical
condition . One of the marvels of sewing mechanisms with ALL W & G attachments .
The Wilcox & Gibbs model 64 chain stitch sewing machine“…is the stable mate of many collections around the world”.
In 1855 after James E. Gibbs saw a simple illustration of a
Grover & Baker machine it triggered the new idea: The rotating hook on the
main shaft could enter into the loop formed by the friction from the treaded
needle going up through the fabric, elongate it and hold expanded while the
feed dog moved the fabric until the needle at the next needle bar down stroke
goes through the previously formed loop, getting drawn through it and therefore
to form a chain.Then in 1856 after actually witnessing a Singer model # 1
machine in action(patent #8394) Gibbs has come to the obvious conclusion that
the machine was too heavy, complicated, cumbersome and way too expensive. He
has decided to create a less-expensive and simple type of sewing machine. James Gibbs and Charles Willcox has obtained
a few patents(major
one # 17,427 on June 2, 1857)
and patented the Automatic tension and feed improvements, a few more patents for the method of removing the
twists in the thread that caused so many missed stitches on the early models
and also a patent for noise reduction on the feed. After that they have formed “Willcox & Gibbs SMC” and the first
commercial chain stitch sewing machine has been patented and produced in 1857
and became a great success immediately !
W & G Automatic Elastic Chain stitch Noiseless nickel plated sewing machine
Model 64 was sold for a half
price of competitors Grover & Baker and Wheeler
& Wilsonsewing machines that were
selling for around $110. Of course ,the W&G Machines with very ornamental
iron stands with casters, mahogany cabinets and with truly rare
unique cover and working table has cost a lot more .The average wages at
that time were $3.00 per week .Just imagine - It is 8 mo of wages for sewing
machine featured for sale today is the later version and it was either produced
for treadle and after introduction of affordable motors has been retrofitted
with pedal ,motor, stand and case or has been made originally for use with the
original instruction manual with the pamphlet describing how to adapt the
machine head to the stand with motor implied that it could be done
after actual manufacturing date of this particular machine .The original W
& G treadle belt with copper clamp ,original package for that belt and the patented
W & G Wing nut which attaches the machine head to the treadle sort of
There are a few known methods to determine the W & G # 64 year of manufacturing :
on the Serial # A681208 and Method # 1 a presume age of W & G :
681208 subtract 279638 = 401570 . Then divide it by 17500= 22946. Take first 2
digits( 22)and add it to 1877 = 1899.
There is another method :
681208 divide by 8000 = 85.151 , then add 1838 = 1923
The average of these 2 methods is ( 1899+1823) =1911. I could make an assumption that this machine manufactured around 1911 and 102 years old now .
machine is truly in unique cosmetic condition – it is basically flawless . Yes,
I am not really afraid of that word – look at the pics attached . There are
only a microscopically tiny slivers of loss paint are located up on the top of
the machine’s front arch and base. I personally did not see the 102 years old machine in
such impeccable condition .The Complete set of ALL imaginable Original Vintage W&G
attachments comes with this machine -and they are all also in pristine cosmetic
condition- I do not think they ever has been use at all. The cosmetic condition
of original manuals and instructions for utilization of attachments are also
serious restoration I have to do was to completely replace ALL electrical wires
in Pedal,Motor and Light fixture, cleaned the machine, polish chrome plated parts and to strip all old grime and
oxidation from the wood carrying case and to completely refinish it in order to be worthy of
such beautiful machine .
have done was in accordance of original specifications and with due respect to
the antique integrity of this truly unique historical
The machine sews
very well, electrically safe and together with Unique set of attachments could
be the valuable addition to the any serious antique sewing machine collection.
I can offer a few options to package this machine and It would depends on the
new destination location . The case with the machine inside weight is 40 LBS .
Together with packaging materials /carton(s) it would be ~ 60 LBS Dim - 34"x16"x19" .
1. Take the machine head attached to the steel base with the motor out of the wood carrying case and carefully pack it separately with a lot of force of imp[act absorbing materials ( no no , not the bubble wrap) into heavy corrugated cartons. To packthe pedal , attachments , literature, into the wood carrying case and etc into another separate carton .
2. To do the same process as described above
but to pack /ship everything in the same large carton .
3. Or if the destination address
would be within the states with the common borders with Missouri , I leave the machine inside the case . Being inserted into specially made to fit wood base inside the case with the separate compartment for pedal it should be pretty stable there .This option is most likely would be the best possible option from the
prospective of a safe delivery . All what I want for that service is thereimbursementof a money to be spend on actual gas purchase .
When one purchase a unique and relatively heavy collectors
item like this one, a cost of freight is not the issue anymore – the only one issue
need to be taken into consideration - safe delivery . Besides, in the worth
case scenario nobody want to go through with a litigation process with a freight
forwarders and even if an insurance would finally reimburse the
costof items , I would not have the same item and you would not have an
item you want ...
So, do not rush to pay for the shipping cost of the machine based just on the calculator . Let's talk about these options upon completion of the sale .

About Myself : I am a retired textile engineer and sewing & Knitting machines
has been a part of my job. My background in mechanical
engineering combined with some nostalgia, passion and plenty of time on
my hands has made the great implication on my current activities –
Antique and vintage sewing machine restoration.Over the years I have bought, repaired, serviced and refurbished
dozens of machines just for myself and for friends , but now when I am
running out of space to store them in accordance with their status, I
have decided to begin to offer to you these marvels of old engineering at reasonable
MY PROCESS:In order to retain the authenticity of
original time-honored design and those fine details which once embellished the antique sewing machines I am trying to avoid , unless it is really required due to the extremely neglected original condition, any repainting of machine metal parts , steel legs and treadles.Hereis the brief description of my process: If required, I am soaking all moving
parts in WD-40 to get rid of that stubborn solidified whale oil, clean surface
with Murphy’s oil soap, high speed polish chrome plated
parts and apply a thin coat of a mixture of Boiled linseed oil &
turpentine on the originally painted parts and re-assemble machine. The gear driven machines are being properly
cleaned, greased and oiled, the timing is being checked , bobbin case
or shuttle are being taken apart, cleaned and oiled for smooth thread draw, stitch adjusted
to be equal on both sides. If appropriate for that particular
model/class, machine is being tested to sew at slow and fast speeds and
in reverse on numerous layers of denim to assure it is sewing with
ease. For machines with motor /light /foot pedal control the
following steps are being taken to assure that machine is electrically
safe to operate: the motor,
pedal, light wires, are inspected for electrical safety and replaced
(if necessary) from the coils to the connector. The foot
pedals are being cleaned and adjusted for smooth speed control. The machines I offer for sale are
electrically safe and fully guaranteed to sew very well. Please
feel free to ask any questions.

cabinet / irons legs (if

assembly process to avoid any possible
confusion during assembly . Or if it would be required, I could
even crate the cabinet and will place and secure machine head in the
double carton underneath. Please be aware that ONLY in that particular case some

boards . I want to assure you I
