He signs and dates a handwritten copy of his poem "Pearl Diver."
Autograph Poem signed: "William Rose Benet/February 12, 1932", 1 page, 7½10¼. Titled "Pearl Diver". In full: "I had an image of the bright, bare Day/Like a tall diver poised above the Surge/Of blackest night, where its vast flux and verge/Lapped against heaven's ramparts, broad & gray./Flickering with ghostly fires, beneath him lay/That gulf where light must drown that light emerge./His [illegible] radiance stooped to dare its gorge,/Plunged, and flashed deep through showers of soaring spray./Swift his transfigured contours clove the dark,/Suffusing fathom on fathom of night aswirl/With tints of rose, all tremoring into one,/Till from cloud floors he plucked a filmy pearl/And held it high for earth & heaven to mark, -/The cold globe of the winter-shrunken sun." William Rose Benet (1886-1950), the brother of poet Stephen Vincent Benet (1898-1943) and husband of poet Elinor Wylie (1885-1928), founded the "Saturday Review of Literature" (1924), editing it until his death. He was also an accomplished poet, winning the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry (1942) for "The Dust Which is God." Irregular left edge. Fine condition. Click image(s) to enlarge:
