Pioneer television broadcaster and owner of CBS.
Stock Certificate signed on verso: "William S Paley", 1p, 11¼x8¼. One hundred shares of fully paid and non-assessible stock valued at $10 each, issued to Paley in the Pan American Airways Corporation. Delaware, 1933 December 11. This certificate, No. 11357, was redeemed by Paley, who assigned portions of his stock to six different entities, on December 12, 1935. Also signed in type on front: "J.T. Trippe" as President and "H Preston Morris" as Secretary of Pan American Airways Corporation. Witnessed on verso: "Evelyn Lasarow". In 1929, Paley, a cigar executive who had bought radio advertising time, bought the struggling United Independent Broadcasters Network (later known as CBS) for about $400,000. In turning the enterprise into a money-maker, he brought such stars as Bing Crosby, Kate Smith and Frank Sinatra to the airwaves. By 1939, he committed CBS to the new medium of television. He introduced figures including Lucille Ball and Ed Sullivan to a new audience, and became known for his uncanny programming instincts. Paley retired as CEO of CBS in 1977, but remained as Chairman until 1983, when he tapped Thomas Wyman as his successor. Unhappy with Wyman's performance, he returned to the chairmanship in 1986, remaining actively involved in network operations until his death of a heart attack four years later at age 89. Cancellation holes touch "Paley". Overall, fine condition.
