Wm. B. Kerr--large Antique Art Nouveau Sterling Cherub Locket W/ Chain For Sale
This is a sweet antique locket. It is from the William B. Kerr Co. According to the Online Silver Encyclopedia, Kerr was in business from 1855 until 1927 in Newark, NJ. They produced Art Nouveau sterling silver pieces. The company was sold to Gorham.The hallmark is on the back panel behind the glass. It is so tiny that it is very difficult to take a good photograph. But it is the ax (really resembles a tomahawk) with a strip behind it with X's on it. That is the scabard or case that the ax is in. Above the hallmark, it says "Sterling 2." Above that someone has etched in "74" (1874, I presume) and what appears to be WM K. The ornate repousse front has a cherub and a small bird among many swirls and twirls around them. This piece is unusual in that the beveled glass picture holder swings out from between the front and back panels. The piece is 2" long X 1 3/8" wide. The single link chain is a total of 36" long. The total weight of the locket and chain, including the glass, is 1.8 oz. The piece is in very good condition, especially considering its age. There is a small amount of chipping at the top of the glass--I assume from taking the glass out to insert a picture. There is some wear between the cherub's back around the wing and the outer decoration. Also there is evidence of some scraping on the back panel behind the glass where it slides in and out of the front and back of the locket. You can view these conditions in the photos.
