The 90th Bomb Groupwere the" Jolly Rogers " with their distinctive Skull and Crossed Bombs on the tails of B-24 Liberators. These photos are printed from the personal negativecollection of a 90th BG Army Air Corps sergeant who served on Biak Island, New Guinea, the Philippines and Ie Shima from 1943 to 1946.
Nose Art was a painting or design done on the fuselage near the nose of a warplane, usually for decorative purposes as a form of aircraft graffiti. During World War II the practice of naming aircraft flourished, with some aircraft artistically adorned with cartoons and pin-ups. Puns and references to popular culture were common subjects. At the height of the war, nose-artists were in very high demand in the Army Air Force while officials tolerated the nose art in an effort to boost the morale of the crews. This practice was prohibited in later years.
Some of the best nose art appeared on bombers used in the South Pacific. Good examples were the 5th Air Force B-24’s of the90th Bomb Group “Jolly Rogers” including the 319th, 320th, 321th and 400th Squadrons. Good examples could also be seen on P-47 Thunderbolts of the 507th Fighter Group based on Ie Shima, which were long-range fighter-bombers developed for specific use in the Pacific Theater of Operations as escorts. P-38’s of the 475th Fighter Group Satan’s Angels also used some nose art.
