French Fundraising Medals, Pins and Badge DuringDuring WW1, as a way of fundraising, the French Government and other authorised groups organized nationwide days that became known as "Journées". Various medallions, pendants, brooches, pins and badges were sold on the particular day to the general public to help raise funds for French soldiers (les Poilus), their wives and children.
Medal 1- (Photos 3 and 4) - A medal measuring 3.9 cms and made from
hollow tin brass, recognising the contribution ofGeneral Joseph Joffre
(the French Commander-in-Chief) to the war effort. The obverse depicts his
portrait and the reverse bears the inscriptions 'Honneur et Patrie' within a
wreath and around the side 'Gloire aux combattants' and 'Courage 1914 Espoir'.
On the reverse of the French flags and shield of the French Republic there is a
small piece of solder which probably fixed the original pin.
Medal 2- (Photos 5 and 6) Made of cardboard and designed by RenéLalique
this measures 2.75 cms x 2.5 cms and is in good condition with a slight wear
blemish as shown in the photos. It is signed R Lalique and also bears the
inscription 'Orphelinat des Armées’.
Medal 3- (Photo 7) A small silvered medal measuring 2.1 cms recognising
the contribution of General Joseph Joffre.
Medal 4- (Photos 8 and 9)The Touring Club de France organized
Sunday February 7th 1915 as the 'Journée du 75'. The central motif of the medal
is a 75 mm cannon. It is made of pressed brass and measures 3.2 cms
Medal 5-(Photo 10)Measuring 3.5 cms, this hollow pressed
brass medal was for the'Journée Francaise - Secours Nationale 1915'. It
depicts a mother with her two children and an elderly relative accepting help
from a seated figure.
Badge -Journée de la
Tuberculose(photos 11 and 12)This badge was produced to raise funds for those
soldiers who had contracted tuberculosis while serving their country.Dimensions:
4.6 x 4.0 cms.
Flag Pins- The smaller Belgium flag is part of a set of four flags
-along with the French, British and American versions - which were sold
towards the end of the warto raise funds whereas the larger pin was sold
