“CYBER MONDAY CONTINUES !!!” .. “FOR 1 WEEK ONLY !!!”  … “SAVE OVER 30%!!!”“ORIGINALLY $265.   … “NOW ONLY $185. THIS TYPE OF BINOCULARS WAS ISSUED TO THE US NAVY FOR STANDARD OBSERVATION PURPOSES THAT DID NOT REQUIRE RANGE FINDING CAPABILITY.  NAVY LOOKOUTS ON PLANE SPOTTING DETAIL DID NOT WANT A MIL. SCALE RETICLE IN THE WAY OF SPOTTING A PLANE.  MK 33 SETS WERE ISSUED TO NAVY PERSONNEL, US COAST GUARD PERSONNEL & EVEN MARINE UNITS MIGHT HAVE BEEN ISSUED THESE, THOUGH ONLY WHEN THEY WERE THE ONLY TYPE AVAILABLE TO FILL A REQUISITION, AS THE US NAVY M9 SERIES WAS MOST COMMONLY ISSUED TO MARINE UNITS.

DURING WWII THE U.S. NAVY EMPLOYED SOME 24 DIFFERENT BASIC MODELS OF BOTH (6 X 30)
(9 X 30) (7 X 50) (10 X 45) (3 X Series) (Mark 8 Series) (9 x 63) AND (6 x 50) BINOCULARS & VARIANT MODELS OF THESE.  THE DIFFERENT MODELS WERE EMPLOYED FOR USE PER THE SPECIFICS OF EACH TYPE.
U.S. NAVY BINOCULARS OF THE DIFFERENT MODELS WERE ISSUED THRU THE BUSHIPS (BUREAU OF NAVY SHIPS) & THE BUORD (BUREAU OF ORDANANCE)
DURING WWII THERE WERE MORE THAN A HALF DOZEN DIFFERENT COMPANIES CONTRACTED TO PRODUCE BINOCULARS FOR THE US MILITARY & SPECIFICALLY FOR THE US NAVY.

THIS U.S. NAVY SET OF (6 X 30) STANDARD ISSUE BINOCULARS WAS PURCHASED IN THE EARLY 90’s.
THE METAL HOUSING WITH PEBBLED COVER IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION THRU OUT WITH NO DENTS, DAMAGE, OR BROCKEN PARTS.  THE OBJECT LENSE END CAPS REMAIN IN GREAT CONDITION AS WELL, THE RIGHT END CAP HAS 1 EXTREMELY MINOR INNER ABRASION.   THE LEFT & RIGHT FOCUL LENSES ARE IN PERFECT CONDITION, CLEARLY GRADUATION MARKED, & FULLY ADJUSTABLE.  THE LENSE EYE CUPS ARE ALSO IN PERFECT CONDITION WITH NO CHIPS OR BROCKEN PIECES.  ALL GLASS IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.  THE CENTER HINGE IS FULLY ADJUSTABLE & THE CENTER CAP IS GRADUATION MARKED AS WELL.

*** IN THE PRIMARY (12) PHOTO PICTURE GALLERY, PICTURE NO. 6 IS A PHOTO OF ANOTHER IDENTICAL SET OF MK33 (6 X 30) BINOCULARS (FROM UNIVERSAL CAMERA) IN MINT CONDITION WITH PERFECT FACE PLATES, TAKEN FROM A PRIVATE COLLECTION, THAT I AM USING TO COMPARE THE SET I HAVE FOR SALE TO, IN LEVEL OF CONDITION. ***

*** OVER THE YEARS AS I BUILT THE BINOCULAR PORTION OF THE COLLECTION, I ALWAYS TRIED TO COLLECT THE FINEST BINOCULAR SETS I COULD FIND & AFFORD, AND ALWAYS LOOKED FOR THE COSMETICALLY NICEST SETS WITH VERY GOOD CONDITION & CLEARLY MARKED FACE/DATA PLATES.
I HAVE SEEN SEVERAL UNIVERSAL MK33 (6 X 30) BINOCULARS IN PRISTINE CONDITION WITH PERFECT DATA PLATES. (A PERFECT 10 ON THE SCALE: I HAVE INCLUDED 1 PHOTO FOR COMPARISON TO MINE) I USED THIS COSMETICALLY PERFECT CONDITION SET TO COMPARE MINE TO. ***
THE DATA PLATES ON THIS SET, ON A SCALE OF 1-10, I RATE AROUND A 8.5 TOGETHER.
THE LEFT FACE PLATE (I RATE IT AN 8 ON THE SCALE) DEVELOPED SOME VERY, VERY MINOR WEAR, AS SEEN IN THE PICTURE GALLERY, AND ITS FORMER OWNER SCRATCHED HIS INITIALS INTO IT WITH A CODE NUMBER … FORTUNATELY,HE DID A PRETTY NEAT JOB & SCRATCHED HIS INFO. INTO THE PLATE RIGHT BESIDE THE LEFT LENSE BARREL IN SMALL FINE PRINT, TO THE DEGREE THAT IT DOESNOT REALLY DETRACT FROM THE ORIGINAL COSMETIC CONDITION OF THE PLATE.  HE WAS NEAT & DIDN’T MESS IT ALL UP.       HE INITIAL MARKED IT : NPS 5-6
THE RIGHT FACE PLATE IS A 9 ON THE SCALE.
THE FACE PLATES ARE MARKED AS FOLLOWS:
LEFT FACE PLATE:      6 X 30
RIGHT FACE PLATE:   U.S.NAVY BUSHIPS (BUREAU OF SHIPS)
REAR HINGE CAP: BINOCULAR PRODUCTION SERIAL NO. 64903 (THE SER.# DENOTES THESE BINOCULARS AS HAVING BEEN MANUFACTURED BETWEEN APRIL-JUNE 1943 PER SERIAL NUMBERS PRODUCTION RECORDS.
OVERALL COSMETICALLY THESE BINOCULARS ARE IN EXTREMELY GOOD 8.5+ SCALE CONDITION.
THE OUTER FACTORY PAINT REMAINS IN EXCELLENT ORIGINAL GLOSS CONDITION WITH ONLY MINISCULE PAINT LOSS ON A FEW LITTLE EDGE SPOTS & THE OUTER BODY HAS ONLY SLIGHT BLEMISH WEAR INDICATIVE OF 73 YEAR OLD BINOCULARS THAT WERE WELL CARED FOR.
OPTICS & COLMINATION:
THE OPTICS ON THIS SET IS ABSOLUTELY “PRISTINE!!!”
FOR 73 YEAR OLD BINOCULARS, THE VISUAL IMAGE IS CRYSTAL CLEAR .. TRULY AN ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL CLEAN SET, AS SEEN IN THE PICTURE GALLERY FROM PHOTOS TAKEN THRU THE LENSE TO SHOW THE CLEAR FULL IMAGE.  THESE BINOCULARS ARE READY FOR IMMEDIATE DEPLOYMENT!

***THESE BINOCULARS “DO NOT” HAVE THE MIL. SCALE RETICLE.***
***THEY DO NOT HAVE THE “RANGE FINDER GRID”

THE SET COMES WITH IT’S ORIGINAL BLACK LEATHER NECK STRAP IN PERFECT CONDITION.

CARRY CASE:
THE BINOCULARS COME WITH THEIR ORIGINAL ISSUE “UN-MARKED” M17 CARRY CASE.
DURING WWII THE STANDARD (6 X 30) BINOCULARS CAME WITH SEVERAL CARRY CASES DESIGNED TO CARRY THEIR DESIGNATED BINOCULARS.  WWI ISSUED BINOCULARS THAT WERE RE-ISSUED DURING WWII IN (6 X 30) SERIES WERE (E/EE SERIES BINOCULARS ISSUED WITH AN E/EE SERIES LEATHER CARRY CASE WITH SHOULDER STRAP, REAR BELT LOOP & 60% OF THE CASES WERE ISSUED WITH A TOP LID COMPASS. IN 1942-43 WHEN THE NEW M3 SERIES (6 X 30) BINOCULARS WERE INTRODUCED, THEY CAME WITH THE NEW PRODUCTION M17 LEATHER CARRY CASE IN THE SAME STANDARD CONFIGURATION WITHOUT A LID COMPASS.   THE M17 CARRY CASE WAS PRODUCED IN SEVERAL VERSIONS.  THE US MARINES & US NAVY WERE ISSUED M17 CARRY CASES THAT WERE UNMARKED, WITH NO MODEL NUMBER OR DESIGNATION NUMBER & CAME IN A CORDOVAN/BLACK COLORED LEATHER. ADDITIONALLY, THEY CAME LINED & UN-LINED BY DIFFERENT SUB-CONTRACTORS.   US ARMY ISSUED M17 CARRY CASES CAME IN MEDIUM BROWN LEATHER & WERE PREDOMINANTLY MARKED & DESIGNATED ON THE TOP LID – CASE, CARRYING, M17  - MODEL # D44160 ON THE TOP OF THE CASE.
THIS IS THE “UN-MARKED” US NAVY ISSUED CORDOVAN/BLACK LEATHER CARRY CASE WITH ORIGINAL SHOULDER CARRY STRAP WITH ADJUSTABLE BUCKLE.
THE FRONT LEATHER CLOSURE TAB SHOWS SOME WEAR CONSISTANT WITH 73 YEARS OF USE BUT REMAINS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION.  BODY LID & TOP HANDLE STRAP”NEVER USED” IS IN EXCELLENT ORIGINAL CONDITION.  ALL RIVETS & STITCHING, & LID ARE IN EXCELLENT TOP COLLECTOR GRADE CONDITION. THE CARRY STRAP IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION BUT SHOWS WEAR AT DIFFERENT POINTS CONSISTANT WITH 73 YEARS OF USE … IT’S COMPLETE, SECURE & THERE ARE NO TEARS OR LOOSE STITCHING BUT JUST 2 SMALL CRACKS IN THE LEATHER, 1 ON THE LEFT BY THE CASE & 1 ON THE RIGHT ABOVE THE CASE.  THE ONLY DETRACTION ON THIS CARRY CASE IS THE FACT THAT THE BLACK PAINTED METAL SHOULDER STRAP BUCKLE HAS LOST ALL IT’S BLACK PAINT .. IT’S WORN AWAY & THE BUCKLE IS THE ONLY PIECE THAT SHOWS AGE & WEAR.
THE INSIDE OF THE CASE IS FELT LINED & IN ABSOLUTELY PERFECT LIKE NEW CONDITION.
“ONE OF THE BIGGEST ISSUES WITH COLLECTING WWII BINOCULARS IS THE FACT THAT SO OFTEN THE CARRY CASE THAT COMES WITH THEM ARE SO OFTEN IN VERY POOR CONDITION, HEAVILY USED, TORN LEATHER, MISSING OR COMPLETELY BROCKEN CARRY STRAPS THAT HAVE TO BE EITHER MENDED/STITCH REPAIRED, OR SIMPLY REPLACED, BROCKEN LIDS, BADLY WORN OR DAMAGED INTERIORS & BADLY WORN OR DAMAGED EXTERIORS.”
ON A SCALE OF 1-10, THIS ORIGINAL 1943 ISSUED USN “UN-MARKED” M17 CARRY CASE IS A STRONG 9 ON THE SCALE.  IT’S IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.

*** THIS IS AN ORIGINAL WWII 1943 ISSUED “UN-MARKED M17 MODEL CARRY CASE ***
*** THIS IS NOT A REPRODUCTION CARRY CASE FROM WHAT PRICE GLORY ***

THIS IS A TOP COLLECTOR GRADE WWII 1943 U.S. NAVY (6 X 30) SERIES BINOCULARS COMPLETE SET MANUFACTURED BY UNIVERSAL CAMERA CORP., WITH NECK STRAP & M17 CARRY CASE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION & CRYSTAL CLEAR OPTICS THAT WILL MAKE AN EXCELLENT ADDITION TO ANY WWII OR WWII US NAVY COLLECTION, & CERTAINLY FOR THE DISCERNING COLLECTOR LOOKING TO ADD THE VERY BEST TO THEIR COLLECTION.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND FOR THIS & OTHER US NAVY BINOCULARS FROM RESEARCH & REFERENCE SOURCES:

In the field of optics two of the more notable established manufacturers of binoculars in the United States were Bausch & Lomb Opt. Co. of Rochester, New York, and Spencer Lens Company (American Optical), of Buffalo, New York. There was much cooperation between the manufacturing companies, so Bausch & Lomb could provide prisms and lenses or complete instruments to other companies for integration into their larger systems. Wartime production designs were standardized as much as practical so that parts made by one company could be interchanged with parts made by another during final assembly, this was especially helpful for streamlining repairs at facilities closer to the combat areas. To that end Bausch & Lomb licensed it’s designs and assisted six other companies including Kollsman Instrument Co., Universal Camera Corp., and Anchor Optical Corp. to gear up for mass production while also standardizing the binoculars.

Binocular Designation: Model, Type, Manufacturer – A particular binocular design might have been needed in such large quantities that multiple companies would be contracted to meet the demand. Consider the Mark 32 7x 50 binocular, production of this model was assigned by BU.SHIPS to: Anchor, National, and Universal.  Each contracted Mark 32 production lot bore a ’Mod x’ designation to reflect the assigned manufacturer. So the Mod 0 suffix indicated that Mark 32 was made by Anchor, the Mark 32 Mod 1 was the designation assigned to National, and so on.

Binoculars case production during WWII:
M8 : Case without specific markings apart from the Baush & Lomb logo on top of lid.
M6 and M9: Case without markings at start of production, then standard M17 case.
M3: Case marked M17 with Nash-Kelvinator or Westinghouse stamped in the inner part of the case at start of production,
Standard M17 without contractor name stamped or model number designation (circa 1943) ********
M17: Case with – Case, carrying, M17  - Model – D44160
M5: Specific case marked Wollensak on top of lid.
M13 : Standard M17 without contractor name.

Universal Camera Corporation was founded between 1932-1933 by Otto W. Githens & Jacob Shapiro. It was originally located at 521 South Ave. in New York City.  The company specialized in the manufacture of Movie Cameras, Rolled Film, & several models of Cameras.
The Universal Camera Corporation found great success in the early/mid-1930s by selling very inexpensive cameras and film. By the late ’30s, however, the camera-buying public was increasingly interested in high-end imports such as the Leica and Contax lines—the simple plastic still cameras offered by Universal up to that point were no competition.   Universal rectified the matter in October of 1938 with the release of the Univex Mercury (Model CC). Cast from an aluminum alloy and covered with leather, the Mercury was not only unlike anything Universal had offered before, it was actually a revolutionary achievement in the industry. I won’t go into all the features, but two are worth noting: First was the unique rotary shutter (responsible for the circular protrusion on top of the camera), capable of extremely accurate speeds up to 1/1000th of a second. Second, the Mercury was the first camera to have internal flash synchronization, known today as the hot shoe.   During WWII the company was contracted to produce Bausch & Lomb designed binoculars, which they did under license.  They produced both licensed & designed versions in both (6 X 30) & (7 X 50) Universal produced over 50,000 sets of binoculars for the British military during the war & produced over 130,000 sets of binoculars for the US Army, US Marines, & the US Navy.  Universal Camera Corp. suspended their normal camera-making operations during World War II in order to manufacture binoculars for the armed forces. When the war ended Universal resumed camera production, however, by 1951 the company was veering toward bankruptcy as a result of supplier problems, bad luck, and some really awful management decisions.  At the beginning of 1952 the company had debts that dated back to shortly after the war, having liquidated most of their finished goods at a near-loss, and still didn’t have the funds to buy materials to make new products.  By the end of the year the company found itself in total disarray & literally had become insolvent.   By taking left over stock parts that the company still had in inventory Universal managed to produce several versions of re-worked camera designs & sales continued thru 1963, but continued financial woes could not be overcome and in 1964 the company filed for bankruptcy and closed its doors for good.
