Xenis Collectible Doll - 12-inch Wooden Dress Up Doll - Sophie

Sophie is a 12-inch dress up doll made of solid wood. She is part of the Xenis collection of Forever Friends. This impish redhead with freckles comes dressed in boxer shorts and a t-shirt. Several outfits are available separately. Please inquire if you are interested in purchasing an outfit with your Xenis doll.

THE PROCESS

There are many steps involved in the creation of Xenis designs. Each doll goes through a design process that includes sketching, sculpting and mocking up many samples. Once a sample is completed the finished pieces can begin to be created.

THE DESIGN

Each design starts with a sketch. The sketch provides a guideline to follow and a goal to achieve. The transformation from a 2D drawing to a 3D doll can be amazing. An original sculpt out of clay is made for every design. Depending on the design, sometimes several sculpts will be needed. These can include head, hands, feet, limbs and/or torso. Once the sculpt is finished a resin cast is made. Resin is much more durable than clay and is necessary for the next steps.

THE WOODSHOP

Once the sculpts are cast in resin they are ready to be turned into wooden dolls. Each resin cast is mounted on blocks and becoms the master for the carving machine. The carving machine is manually run and roughly cuts out the pieces from blocks of wood. The models that come off the machine are quite rough and will require hours of hand sanding and an amazing amount of hand work. Using rotary carving tools, chisels and sand paper. Each piece is sanded down to a smooth finish with no detail forgotten. Once sanded the heads are ready to be sealed and painted. A beautiful sealer is used that gives the wood a very warm feeling. All the faces are painted with very light washes to allow the beauty of the wood show through. All pieces are now ready for stain and any finishing touches. Many of the stains are mixed in house to guarantee the perfect colour.

SAFETY

Xenis Fine Wooden Dolls are most frequently purchased as collectors items, and not toys. However, they are made to withstand supervised play and will most certainly be adored by children and adults alike. They may include small parts that could pose as a choking hazard to small children or babies, and therefore should not be given to children 3 years of age or younger. Parents and care givers should use discretion as to whether their child is ready to play carefully with a special doll and should always provide supervision during play.
