Original South Africa 1877-8-9 campaign medal with bar '1879' issued for Zulu War service to 1089 Pte. T. Williams, 99th Regiment. Very good/fine condition, small mark to obverse.
The 99th were despatched to southern Africa as one of only two infantry battalions sent as reinforcements prior to the invasion of Zululand. They were attached to the No. 1 (Right Flank) Column under Col. Charles Pearson; a famous photograph shows a company of the 99th in a pont waiting to be ferried across the Thukela river into Zululand on the day the invasion began. Elements of the 99th were involved in the battle of Nyezane on 22 January 1879 (fought on the same day as Isandlwana) and were subsequently invested with Pearson's garrison at the mission station of Eshowe.
See 'Fearful Hard Times' by Ian Castle and Ian Knight for a detailed history of the Eshowe campaign.
