Zachary Taylor 1848 Brass Coat Button/"ol' Rough N Ready"/for President-original:
Here is a scarce and desirable political souvenir for sale. This is a coat button, approximately 23 mm in diameter for the election of General Zachary Taylor to President in 1848. The brass button shows on the front the bust of General Taylor and the legend of" Old Rough and Ready" and the reverse is impressed with "Hero of Buena Vista, referring to the Battle against Santa Anna, where Taylor defeated the Mexicans which greatly outnumbered the Americans under Taylor, and which effectively sounded the death of the War and the defeat of Mexican expansion ideas. General Taylor actually pretty well defeated his counterparts every time they fought! Not much of a politician but was voted into the Presidency, despite his political shortcomings, on the merit of his popularity as a military leader and soldier. Great button with no dents. The button loop on the reverse is loose but overall a very nice condition and desirable political piece that is almost 165 years old!
