Zuni Maiden Kachina Doll By Sterling Francis 13+" W/base Est 1980s Cotton Wood:
Zuni Maiden Kachina Doll by Sterling Francis, a carver listed in the book "Hopi Katsina, 1600 Artist Biography" by Gregory Schaaf. When I purchased the doll the information I was given indicated this is Sterling Francis Sr., a Hopi living in Laguna Pueblo, NM, which is home to his wife. The Zuni Maiden stands a bit over 13" including the base. Additional information I was given indicated it was carved from cotton wood root in about 1985. The maiden has subtle coloring and is carved in a very traditional manner, and the seller indicated they had been purchased from a gallery in Old Town Albuquerque. There is a crack in the back of the base, which is not uncommon for this type of wood. Unfortunately I have to downsize and several of my kachina dolls will be listed on . I did have the Zuni Maiden valued by a gallery owner here in NM, and he indicated it was worth between $180 and $190.PayPal only, payment within three days of close of sale.
