Long ago folks used heavy shouldered animals for pulling and hauling. Thus the Whippletree or Whiffletree was born. It distributes force equally through linkages, so the animals can carry the burden equally. This one is probably made by LOUDEN, has a patented date of October 1, 1895 date stamped in the cast iron. Also the markings A30, 31, and 32 appear in the iron. It measures 29\" across, has a drop length of 17.5\" and has a 2.5\" thick single piece of wood cut and bent in a horseshoe shape. The hook turns freely in the iron, making it perfectly usable if you need to hitch the ponies, but it would also look awesome hanging in the living room of an Industrial Farmhouse.
