Truly impressive and I think quite RARE, antique Chinese export hand fan, dating from the mid 19th century or a little earlier. Sadly in need of repair. The guard sticks are bronze or brass that was gilded some of which is now worn off, they depict scholars and noble men. The central sticks are all present with damage to only one - one of the mother of pearl sticks has a clean break near the base (see photo).
There are 14 central sticks in a mixture of materials, 2 carved brise wood, 6 carved brise material, 4 left natural colour and two stained red, 2 mother of pearl and 4 filigree metal with cloisonne enamel in blue and green. The paper leaf is hand painted both sides, one side has many people with little round applied faces. As you can see the leaf is damaged - in the past a repair has been attempted, I am not sure if a section is missing or if it has become stuck together with another section.
