Keg Civil War Era Water Whiskey Keg with Bale Handle

Civil War Era - c.1860\'s

Bale Handled Oak Wood

FIELD KEG

Whiskey or Water Carrier

DESCRIPTION

This is a Civil War Eraantique wooden field keg made by a cooper. From a fine collection of CIVIL WAR era artifacts here in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. It\'s been well cared for and has a beautiful patina to the wood.

Made more than 150 years ago it is still in wonderful condition. It was used for carrying either water or whiskey. Probably whiskey since there is some dark dried debris that was still inside, we have been able to shake out most of it.

A wire bale carrying handle is attached to the two outer hoops. There is a tin ring covering the opening it is held on with tiny nails, a few are missing. Hand carved wooden stopper that is certainly quite old, but may be a replacement.

You can still see and feel the lines of the coopers down shave along the sides of the oak staves which are all good and tight. The ends are carefully chamferred around the edges for a close tight fit to the staves making the keg water tight. The iron hoops had slipped here and there over the years, a few odd nails were added to hold them good and tight.

Overall still in excellent condition. A beauty of a Civil War Era FIELD KEG

Size: 10\" long x 7-1/4\" across - 25\" circumference
