YOU ARE offerDING ON A 700+ YEAR OLD ILLUMINATED LEAF FROM THE HOLY BIBLE, FEATURING A LARGE MINIATURE INITIAL TOUCHED IN GOLD AND INTERTWINED WITH FOUR DRAGONS
This is a unique thin, virgin vellum leaf with a large and quite beautiful illuminated miniature with four dragons produced in Paris, France, in the mid thirteenth century, circa 1240 or so.
The text here is from a Biblia Latina, covering Job Chapters 38-42, and the first chapter of Esdras which contains the illumination.Printed on virgin gossamer vellum, the piece remains in good shape, with light soiling at the lower corner. Zoomorphic illuminated initial ”A” of roughly 17 lines , with the extensions. Dragons are blue, red and pink with white tracery, have burnished gold embellishments and are all outlined in black, seemingly with heads placed at the end of plant sprigs. Additionally, there are red and blue penwork chapter numberings. Text ccomplexly arranged and created in two columns, painted with the utmost in precision, a great relic of the care and time taken to make this page. Red rubricated. Pics taken with and without flash to show details; page is not yellowed. Matted in open compartment cardboard, in 'Otto Ege' style, the leaf lightly mounted at the inside corners; mat measures 14" x 11.5"; opening showing leaf is 7.75" x 5.5", and leaf itself 8" x style="color: rgb(255, 0, 16);">EXTREMELY RARE
