Circa 1888 sculptural, soldered tinparade torch in the shape of a top hat. Most likelyfrom the Benjamin Harrison campaign, who ran forPresident of the UnitedStates in 1888 and incorporated the "top hat" as a campaign symbol. Much like weathervanes, this partly hand manufactured sculpture crosses categories appealing also to folk-art collectors.
Wikipedia reads: Campaign torchlights were first patented in 1837 butdid not become popular until the 1860s. The "Wide-Awakes", a marching club for Lincoln began organizing torchlight parades for community entertainment. TheColumbia Club was founded in 1888 as a marching society for Benjamin Harrison."
The top hat torch is made of tin and is hollow to hold oil or kerosene. There are twowirearms that arc around the hat and are attached to a metal sleeve which would have a staff inserted into the sleeve to be carried in a parade. (a perfect opportunity for a display stand that doesn't interrupt the integrity of the artifact). Small stamped lettering on bottom reads: PAT. APP.
Approximate size (excluding wire yoke) is 4-1/2" widex 6-1/2" tallx 6-3/8" deep.As found and uncleaned original condition withsome light surface rust, dings and scuffs.
