C.1910 Albuquerque, New Mexico Good For 2½¢ In Trade White Elephant Saloon Token For Sale

C.1910 Albuquerque, New Mexico Good For 2½¢ In Trade White Elephant Saloon Token

c.1910 ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO Good For 2½¢ In Trade WHITE ELEPHANT SALOON Token

This is a quite rare Good For 2½¢ In Trade Token from the White Elephant Saloon of Albuquerque, New Mexico. This Bar operated from 1881 until 1918. They also issued tokens that were Good For a Drink. There appears to be two slightly different addresses on some of the tokens. Some say 122 Second & Railroad Avenues and other list 106 South Second Street. This one has no address.

It was common practice to offer a Drink and a Cigar for a quarter or two bits. I imagine these were used as change so a dime and one of these would probably buy a drink.

The White Elephant had several owners over its life. Joseph Barnett was the proprietor from 1910 onward (he also ran the Palace Billiard Parlor in town), and there were three bartenders, a manager and a porter employed that year. The White Elephant was replaced by the Sunshine Theater shortly after Prohibition began. Thanks to Moss Mine Treasures for that info.

Weight: 1.05 Gram, 24 Millimeter, Aluminum.

New Mexico Trade Tokens by Billy Kiser #135.

Listed on the TokenCatalog.com database.

Obverse: WHITE • (Elephant) • ALBUQ. N. M. • All in a plain border on an octagonal flan.

Reverse: GOOD FOR • 2½¢ • IN TRADE • All in a plain border on an octagonal flan.

The Token: A fair example, it saw some use and spent some time in the ground. It is a little bent and has some corrosion damage but the elephant pictorial is still nice. As grading is subjective please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
