C1920 Natural Churro Crystal Navajo Rug Native American Indian Blanket Navaho Nr:
Offered here is a circa 1920 old natural Navaho weaving that measures 6 feet 4 inches long by 4 foot 10 inches wide or 76” x 58”. It is attributed to the Crystal Trading Post weaving area and is in good plus condition with issues noted below. It was handwoven by an expert weaver on a primitive upright loom of all Native handshorn, handcarded and very nicely handspun silky old long staple Churro sheep wool, both weft & warp. This old Crystal has a big bold serrated drum pattern with floating serrated stars and diamonds in the voids. The borders are a stepped meandering motif all the way around. Sometimes our ‘fix-it’ pile just gets too big & we are starting spring ranch/farm work, so we are offering a couple pieces “as is” this week. This weaving is a very good candidate for restoration or would work great for a cabin or ranch rug on the floor… or even as a movie prop. .
We obtained this vintage Native American textile on a rug hunt in Arizona just to offer you here on . It has a smooth, even weft count averaging 24 per inch and a warp count of 6 per inch. The selvage cords are: 1 side good with several breaks, 1 side poor and mostly gone with wear, 1 end very good to excellent and 1 end good with approximately 8” of cords missing. Warp selvages are 2-spiral cords and weft selvages are 2-spiral cords. Three corners are good condition with just a little wear and 1 fair with fraying. The tassels are all four missing. It has not been cleaned, is fairly clean now & comes from a non-smoking home. The whites have light soiling and would all brighten with a wash if desired. There is a place of 7” of missing end cords and broken warp loops. One corner has fraying 1 ½” in and there are a lot of broken weft loops along one side. The body of the rug is very good plus. The browns are darker on one side than the other. Both sides are shown in photos above. Colors are great in this piece of old American Indian art and they are: hand carded & hand blended natural grayish brown, brownish grey, variegated chocolate brown and ivory white. Complete with lazy lines as well as an internal Spirit Trail or weaver’s pathway, this example of antique Native Americana is ready to head your way.
