C1930s Chimayo Blanket Germantown Non-navajo Mexican American Textile Weaving Nr For Sale
Offered here is a circa 1930s Chimayo weaving
that measures 7 feet 3 inches long by 3 foot 3 inches wide or 87” x 39”. It is attributed to the Chimayo, NM weaving
area and is in very good condition. It
was handwoven by an expert weaver on a horizontal shuttle loom of all commercial
4-ply Germantown wool yarns, both weft and warp. Here is a beautiful old Chimayo blanket with
a great red field. It has 2 black, grey
and white serrate diamond medallions on the deep red field. The end fields have bold compound black,
white & grey stripe panels. Great
color & design being offered here on a nice old large Chimayo blanket -
runner with .
We obtained this vintage Mexican American textile on
consignment from California just to offer you here on . It has a smooth, even weft count averaging 30
per inch and a fine warp count of 11 per inch.
The selvages are all in good to very good condition. There are about 2 dozen warp fringe knots
that have come untied. Warp selvages are
warp knot finished and weft selvages are natural weft loop finished around the
outside warp. The corners are all four in
very good condition. Warp knot fringes are in very good on one end and fair to
good on the other end. It has never
been cleaned, is fairly clean & comes from a non-smoking home. There are seven ¾” & smaller old Native
type repairs and about 2 dozen ¼” and smaller spots of old moth bites. There are several scattered 1” & smaller
dirty spots and the colors & whites would brighten & clean with a
wash. The untied warp knots could be retied
or stabilized with a fabric cement. Both
sides are even in pattern color and shown in photos above. Colors are great in this piece of old Chimayo
art and they are: natural blended steel
grey & ivory white along with aniline black and a rich deep red. This example of New Mexican Americana is
ready to head your way. (JK1)
