ca 1880's Purple Brocade / Velvet Bustle Dress / Gown Sm
This lovely Victorian gown is made from a dark purple silk velveteen. The bodice has ivory silk brocade down the front, it buttons with covered buttons and is trimmed with lovely Brussels lace. It's fitted with gores, the seams in center back open to pleats at the waist. it's lined in ivory silk with bones in the seams. It had a rough time on the hanger, both sleeves are very torn right where the curve of the hanger is, otherwise no problem. It measures 34 inches around the bust, across the back shoulder is 11 1/2 inches, waist is 24 and from shoulder to center front point is 21 inches and the back hangs longer. It has a NY dressmaker it looks like Lancy on the petersham. The skirt opens in front to show the ivory brocade that is also on the front of the bodicer. The velvet curves at the bottom falling to a long train with a knife pleated ruffle around the edge. The brocade has long scallops around the bottom that show 2 pleated ruffles in the openings, the silk lining on the scallops is shreadding. The velvet is torn about 6 inches right below where it attaches at the waist and the train has a tear from edge to center seam, you could either make a seam there or trim the train about 4 inches shorter. If you do trim the train a bit shorter, you might get a little fabric to do something with the shoulder of the sleeves, maybe a bias band around the top or a ruffle. The side of the skirt is draped at the upper hip and it has a ribbon waistband. There's a little bit of lining on the side skirt that is shattered, otherwise the skirt looks like it wasn't lined fully. The left side of the skirt has a 4 inch mend just a bit below the waist and another tear about 2 inches starting in the same area. The velvet seems strong where there are no tears, but easily tears where there are already tears started. IT measures 23 1/2 inches around the waist, hips are full and it measures down the front 38 inches long. It was de-accessioned from a museum and the inventory tags attached.
