Very rare and original, ca1870\'s Native American Plains Indian Hand Made Elk Antler Hide Scraper / Flesher with numerous marks that appear to be tally marks and remnants of red paint decoration.

This massive and outstanding, early Native American Hide Scraper measures approx. 12\" long and features many and scattered short carved notches that are consistent with tally marks although they could be some other type of decoration / markings. There is an area of light red color in the area where the Scraper would be grasped as well as some even lighter red pigment that runs up toward the head of the tool from that larger spot. We are unsure of the Plains Indian Tribe that this Massive Hide Scraper / Flesher was associated with but it did come with another Scraper that appeared to be Lakota Sioux in origin.

When originally used, this outstanding 19th century Flesher would have had an iron blade affixed to the crooked scraper end using sinew strips. While in the past we have owned much smaller Native American Indian Hide Scrapers, this is the first of these very large, Elk Antler Hide Scrapers that we have had the pleasure to own and offer. These were used to prepare large hides for teepees, clothing and other uses by the Native American Indians of the Plains.

While we are not experts in Native American items we recently had an opportunity to buy a number of wonderful items from various Private Collection and some that had been deaccessioned from Museum collections. We have always admired these types of items and took the plunge into an area where we had not ventured often before. The items offered in this week\'s sale are the last from this group.
