Ca1871 Patent Medicine Advertising Countertop Display Box - Kidney Plasters:
Very Rare, original 1870’s Patent Medicine Country Store, Countertop Display Box with all over, paper pastedown panels featuring wonderful chromolithograph illustrations. This outstanding, Mitchell's Original Kidney Plasters Advertising Display Box is made of wood and measures approx. 13 3/4” by 9 1/4” by 3” tall.
This wonderful, Countertop Display Box has an all over, pastedown paper label applied to the top that features images of a bare backed man and woman with heart shaped Kidney Plasters applies to the small of their back. Text on this panel reads "Mitchell's Original Kidney Plasters" / "Manufactured Only By The Pioneer Novelty Plaster Works, Lowell. Mass, U.S.A." and "Geo. E. Mitchell - Founder - Sole Proprietor".
The side panels of the Display Box are covered with all over, pastedown labels that feature a portrait of George E. Mitchell himself and text that reads "Mitchell's Original Kidney Plasters". The back panel of the Box features an image of the "saddle shaped" plaster at the center (it actually is more heart shaped) with text that reads "These Plasters Need No Warming To Apply / Applied By the Warmth of the Body".
The front of the Box is actually the front panel of a drawer with a brass ring handle and escutcheon and an all over, pastedown paper label that is identical to that found on the rear panel. When the drawer is opened, the customer would find the Kidney Plasters. On the bottom surface of the drawer there is a fantastic, all over, pastedown label with an elaborately engraved view of the Plaster Factory at the center surrounded by numerous, vignette interior views of the factory, a portrait of George Mitchell and numerous crates and packages of Mitchell’s Kidney Plasters.
While this wonderful Country Store Patent medicine Countertop Display Box is not dated, the elaborate engraving on the bottom of the drawer does have a patent date of 1871 and the form and content of the Box and its pastedown labels confirm a date of manufacture in the early to mid 1870’s.
This very rare and wonderful, 19th century Pastent Medicine, Countertop Display Box is in very good condition. The Box itself is sound and intact with no loss to the wood substrate and only a very small area of separation between the front edge of one of the side panels and the bottom of the box (see the scans below). The pastedown paper labels on the outer surface of the Box have some cracking and some small areas of paper loss (as can be seen in the scans below) and there is some overall, uniform darkening to the labels. The label on the bottom of the drawer is exceptionally well preserved and very attractive.
A very rare and wonderful, 1870’s American patent Medicine Country Store, Countertop Display Box and a fantastic addition to any collection!!!
