Ca1885 Chromolithograph Cigar Box Label W/ High Wheel Bicycles Salesman's Sample For Sale
Very rare and very attractive, ca1885, George S. Harris, Salesman's Sample, Chromolithograph Advertising Cigar Box Inner Label for "Bicycle" Cigars featuring a simply fantastic image of three athletes racing high wheel bicycles!!
This wonderful American Sample Cigar Box Label measures approx. 8 1/8” by 5 13/16" and was originally contained in a Cigar Label Sample Book manufactured by premier lithographers George S. Harris & Sons of Philadelphia. The Inner Cigar Box Label depicts a High Wheel Bicycle Race with three cyclists - two riding “Ordinaries” or “Penny Farthing” High Wheel Bicycles and one (bringing up the rear) riding a High Wheel Safety Cycle. Two well dressed men stand by the side of the track - one timing the race and the other (holding a thin rod across the track) apparently officiating.
Text at the lower left hand corner of the Label reads in part “BICYCLE” / “Geo S. Harris & Sons Manufacturers of Cigar Box Labels and Trimmings,.... Philadelphia”. There is also a catalog number and a listing of the price for the Label. Interestingly, there is a label affixed to the back of the Bicycle label which is titled “Fine Taste”. This label was lithographed by Witsch & Schmidt of New York City.
This outstanding, ca1885 “Bicycle” Cigar Box Label has two small holed along the left hand edge attesting to the fact that it was originally bound into an Sample Album of Cigar Box Labels. Otherwise it is in very good condition - clean and crisp with bright and vibrant colors. There is a small area of surface scuffing at the lower left hand corner as can be seen in the scans below. There is a small nick to the outside edge of the “Fine Taste” Label but this does not affect the “Bicycle” Label in any way. With a quality matting and framing the Bicycle Cigar Box Label will display beautifully.
A very rare and wonderful, ca1885 George S. Harris, Salesman's Sample, Chromolithograph Advertising Cigar Box Inner Label for "Bicycle" Cigars and a fantastic addition to any collection!!!

Important Notes about Shipping Charges:
The amount quoted for Shipping & Handling is calculated by and is equal to the EXACT amount charged by the Post Office plus a $1.00 "packing fee" - the $1.00 fee is our only compensation for the virgin packing materials we use on all of our professionally packaged boxes as well as our cost for the salaried help that does most of our packing - as I am sure you can see, we make NO profit on the Shipping charges and, in fact, our costs are usually greater than the $1.00 fee. Please contact us if there are any issues regarding the cost of shipping.
