Ca1885 Missouri Pacific Railroad Advertising Sign For Western Immigrants For Sale
Rare and original, ca1885 Paper Board, Chromolithograph Advertising Sign for the Missouri Pacific Railroad advertising passage to Kansas City "and All Points West"!!
This wonderful, Railroad Station Advertising Sign measures approx. 13 1/2" by 10 1/4" and is printed on a medium weight, paperboard stock in red and black inks. Text on the Sign reads "Take The Missouri Pacific For Kansas City And All Points West / Chair Cars Free". While the Sign is not dated we found numerous Broadsides, Timetables and other advertising material issued by the Missouri Pacific Railroad between 1884 and 1887 that touted the fact that they offered "Chair Cars Free".
While the Sign offered here certainly was an advertisement aimed at tourists traveling to the American West in the late 19th century, it main purpose was to attract the flood of immigrants moving westward during this period. Kansas City was certainly as much a "gateway" to the West as was St. Louis and the Missouri Pacific, under the control of New York Financier Jay Gould, was a major mover of both goods and people from east to west across the continent.
This very rare and original, ca1885 Missouri Pacific Advertising Sign is in very good condition. The Sign actually presents in excellent condition - clean and crisp with some light and uniform age toning but no staining or soiling. The lower right hand corner, however is soft and there is a small surface scuff at the center of the bottom edge as well as 2 very short (less that 1/2" long) edge tears near the bottom of the tight hand edge. Overall the Sign is well preserved and will display beautifully with a quality matting and framing.
A very rare and original, ca18885 Missouri Pacific Railroad, Western Americana Advertising Sign and a fantastic addition to any collection!!
