early/mid 1700s SET 7 GEORGIAN ENGLISH STERLING SILVER HANOVERIAN SPOONS
Presented is a fine quality set of 7 Georgian English sterling silver place, dessert, or soup spoons. The spoons have a very traditional Hanoverian design, complete with a pronounced upward turn at the end of the handle. Five of the spoons have the distinctive rat tail design on the back of the bowl as well. The spoons are quite sturdy and well made, with a nice feeling of weight, made from thick heavy silver throughout and quite resistant to bending. Each spoon has a very skillfully engraved crest of a goat's head emerging from a crown, on the terminal of the handle. On the back of each spoon's bowl is an additional crest of a partridge holding a branch in its mouth, beneath a crown, with the initial 'M' underneath.
Most of the hallmarks on these spoons are partially obscured by wear. One of the spoons with the rat tail on the back of the bowl has a clear date mark for 1715, and the rest of the rat tail spoons presumably date to around that time. One of the spoons without the rat tail has a partial date mark which we believe is for 1757 or possibly 1763. All the spoons have the same crest on the terminal of the handle as well as on the back of the bowl, so these are all from the same family and the set was just added to over the years.
The spoons are in excellent overall condition, especially accounting for age. There is some surface wear throughout, but nothing excessive, and the spoons could easily be buffed to a high mirror finish. There are no splits, no breaks, no dents, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
Each spoon is about 6 7/8 inches long.
The set of spoons weighs 244.2 grams or 8.6 regular ounces.
Good luck and offer with confidence.
