You're offerding for a guenine, rare and gorgeous silver medieval gros ofAvignon (France). Pope Gregoire (Gregor, Gregorio) XI (1370-1378.Mint place : Avignon (medieval city in the southern part of France). Silver, about 25 mms,2.73 grams. Nicely toned. Pedigree :bought at an sale Fritz Rudolf KUNKER (sale 217, lot nomber 2612). Numismatic reference : Muntoni 14.
Gregoire XI (Pierre roger de Beaufort) was a pope born in Limousin, at Rosiers d'Egletons (Corrèze, in the center part of France). He was the last Avignon's pope, and unified again the catholic church, ended a halfcentury schism(struggle between the french kings and the pope, for political reasons). He came back to Rome at the end of his life, with the papal title.
