Guillermo Del Toro uses a boys orphanage set in the Spanish Civil War as a backdrop for what I would describe as a good little ghost story. While there are a few scenes that are genuinely creepy it relies more on Del Toro's excellent visual imagination to create an overall effect that is both subtle yet very effective. It scares you on so many levels without being gratuitous. On another level, its setting amidst the horrors of war, creates another fear level. The very real horrors of human nature. Greed and hatred that are all too often a part of human nature are the true frightening elements of our lives. Along with the dark side of human nature it presents the nobler aspects in the characters of the boys and their mortally wounded professor who stand up to fear and greed and are in the end left to fend for themselves in the unknown chaos outside the walls of the school. Overall it is a good story, maybe not a visually stunning as Pan’s Labyrinth, but well worth it to watch.Read full review
The Devil's Backbone by Director Guillermo del Toro is a creative and ingenious movie. To me, it is a lyrical movie surrounded by words of prose. The ensemble acting (children and adults) developed their characters with great bravado. The World II scenario reflects the horrors of this war and all wars. The cinematography, as usual by Director del Toro, brilliantly is another sublime character of the movie. I have seen this move 3 times and it still astounds me.
Aug 14, 2018: Tues: Hello Folks: The plot centers on a ghost child, murdered by another older orphan boy. Set during the Spanish Civil War of 1936+/-. Both sides shot captured enemy soldiers, & the civilian population suffered greatly. War is hell. You will not be disappointed, go ahead & purchase this movie. Cheers. Chuck.

Personally, I would offer this film both for entertainment value as well as film study. The story is truly a work of art. Also, I would recommend a glance at a little Spanish Civil War history with careful attention to Spain's condition toward the end of the war prior to viewing or for a more informed second viewing. I found the film to be deeply moving and somewhat disturbing in light of the historical and cultural background.
Great deal and great movie and good plot.
