The author's life story is truly remarkable, for he overcame obstacles that were unimaginably daunting. First, he had the misfortune to be born into a family headed by illiterate parents who did not have the means to pay for his schooling and were really not even able to afford their rent or daily sustenance for the family (their average combined annual income was $600 a year). Second, he had to grow up in a lousy little shack in the miserable rat-infested black township of Alexandra, where he always had to fear nighttime police raids, enforcement of pass laws, dangerous gangs and possible deportation to a tribal reserve. Third, he had to battle the depression that naturally results from living in hopeless poverty inside a country with the legalized form of racism known as apartheid.
I read this book many years ago and decided to give my granddaughter a copy. It's a excellent book!

One fantastic autobiography! I could hardly lay the book down! Extremely well written and extremely graphic and very well described. If one doesn't understand "apartheid" then you will after reading the book. In-depth insite to the life of a black African boy and his family in a slum city in South Africa. Unimaginable pain and suffering endured in that place, caused by the government and the so called "police", the poverty, the hunger.Unbelieveable one can be jailed for simply losing their meager job! If nothing touches your heart....Kaffir Boy will.
I have never read an autobiography (or a book of any kind) that has made such an enormous impact on my life. Mark Mathabane writes his own life story from a detached perspective and it is impossible to put down. One has to keep reminding himself that this is not a piece of fiction but actually the story of someone's life. This autobioraphy is powerfully raw. Everyone needs to read "Kaffir Boy."
Compelling, interesting, reality of apartheid.
