This is an excellent book for anyone interested in the restoration of old homes. It is Martha's journal with photographs of her restoration of the Adams homestead in Connecticut. The book discusses the restoration, renovation, decoration, and landscaping of that home. Martha also works outside showing how to make the outside as beautiful as the inside with trees, shrubs, an herb garden, fences and stone walls. It is a very beautifully illustrated book. In the introduction of the book, Martha talks about the home she grew up in on 86 Elm Place in Nutley, New Jersey. There are a couple of photographs of that house. There are also pictures and discussion of the first home that Martha and her previous husband, Andy, bought in 1965. It was a one-room schoolhouse which was built in 1850 in Middlefield, Massachusetts. There are also pictures of the 1805 Federal farmhouse, Turkey Hill, where Martha lived for most of her adult life. My book is a 288 page hardcover first edition with a 1992 copyright. If you love Martha, this is a wonderful collectors piece just for the reading and looking.Read full review
If you have an older house especially a colonial or pre 1920 house that is NOT an ornate victorian, this book will give you plenty of ideas about what can be done to restore and renovate/remodel it. Loaded with insight about every aspect of renovation from rebuilding foundation to changing wall placements to exterior paint removal. This book does not give technical details or DYI instructions but it does give very pertinent info about things that need to be done with renovation on an old house especially one with stone foundation and clap board siding. Of great interest is the detail of the description about how they took off the old paint. just a great book with tons of photos and ideas.
All good except for some outdated design - early 90s. All of the structural recommendations are valid and useful.
