This book has been around for thirty odd years. It was recommended by several friends who knew I wanted accurate descriptions about the War of 1812. I was also hoping to learn if the Pennsylvania Militia Companies my ancestors served in were involved in these battles. Walter Lord gives faces and personalities to the participants, great and small. He places the reader inside Washington DC as the buildings burn. The battles for Baltimore and New Orleans come alive in his narration. More, the reader learns about events on both sides of the Atlantic, in England and the United States, and in France, events that lead to a draw, both sides returning to their positions prior to the war. Highly recommended reading. No, there was no mention of my ancestor's Militia, the 4th Detachment (RUSH'S) Pennsylvania Militia nor Thompson's Regiment Pennsylvania Militia. What battles they fought remain a mystery, probably fighting in the north and Canada.Read full review
Lord's typical research about history incorporates the personalities, ironies, heroes and villains to give a much more personal review of the events, and accurately portrays the events in a way that brings history to life and makes it interesting even for a casual history buff.
