Eisenhower Dollars were the last of the large size dollar...They were minted from 1971 through 1978, but did not circulate well. When first issued in 1971 it was the first dollar coin minted since 1935...The "Ike" dollars (as they were commonly referred to) were primarily "clad" dollars made of 75% Copper and 25% nickel as issued by both the Philadelphia mint and the Denver Mint..by the end of the 1972 issues it was quickly known that there were more than necessary amounts of the Ike dollars in circulation...So in 1973 only limited numbers were minted mostly for collectors..Making these coins even rarer by comparison...The Ike's minted in San Francisco were strictly minted for the collectors...There were proofs of the familiar 'clad' version and as in 1971 thru 1976 there were coins made of 40% silver.,..The 1973-S Proof 40% silver are the rarest of all the Ike Dollars with a mintage of 1,013,646 and the 1973-S 40% Silver Uncirculated had a mintage of just 1,883,140..The 1973-S Clad proof 's mintage was 2,760,339...These coins are highly sought after by collectors and their prices reflect the demand...Collecting these coins as of this writing are still easy to obtain, but the prices are going up almost monthly...If you can afford it, try by a completed set of these coins for the best return on your investment...Read full review
