The language is off-putting. The language is most likely accurate. Mostly men. Whiskey. Few rules and fewer women at the beginning. A wild west men's locker room without public education or PBS. Season One is the best––with remarkable characters––from Wild Bill to an ailing preacher.

This series is very engaging, once you get past the horrific use of the F word (2980 times) and other profanities. It also has some historical accuracies, as Seth Bullock, Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Jack McCall, Sol Star, and Al Swearengen were real Old West Characters involved with Deadwood. But the Worst Fault is that the series abruptly ended after the 3rd year!! In the words of the (recently) late Powers Boothe “we were looking forward to the 4th season, as they were negotiating for a fifth season. Then we were told that the Deadwood series was finished”! David Milch gets the credit for all of the profanities, which he tries to justify during a session with Keith Carradine in disc #6 of season #1. Poor Keith Carradine had to listen to this egocentric writer/producer Brag about himself for 60 minutes!! My condolences go out to Keith Carradine. I have already seen this show several times. By far the best drama on TV EVER! If you love great characters, story lines, acting, directing and/or historical pieces, this show will leave you wanting more! I was never a fan of westerns until this show. Any western you watch after this series will seem very "Hollywood" by comparison. Though not historically accurate in every detail, you still get the feeling you are watching a rugged slice of life from the time era. The historical aspects are perfect in the details, though not so much in the real life people they portray. The series is so good, it is easy to forget any discrepancies and get sucked into this television masterpiece.
I loved the characters, the settings and the plot. I'm not good at writing reviews, but I can tell you if you love westerns, you will absolutely LOVE this series. It's raw, brash and emotion filled . Jim Beaver is superb in his role as Whitney Conway Ellsworth.

This series set was purchased as a birthday gift for my husband, who very much enjoyed Deadwood-The First Season. Though filled with excessive profanity, used in new and unusual ways, the series is a riveting look at life in a gold mining camp, presided over by the inimitable Swearingen. The series is great; he's spent many hours watching it. However, the profianity is such that many would not enjoy watching the series.
