I have used the Penn 30 2 speed and enjoyed catching yellowfin and bluefin tuna on it. I decided to go up to the next level--the 40 2 speed. Unfortunately, I am going to have to wait as the fish moved on for the season. I am positive that this reel will handle fish up to a hundred lbs without a problem. I also purchased the 60 2 speed. I will give out before the reel.

In fishing this real with bate, jigs and flat fall jigs the real preformed well. Smooth drag and all the power needed to bring in the big fish. The Penn Fathom reals can be bought for way less than other two speed reals and if you are not getting into 250 or 300 pound fish they work just as good. Casting bait or 6 X jigs this real really stood up to any real in its class.

Reel can do a lot for the size and weight package - as well as the narrow configuration. You'd have to spend a lot more to get a little more. For example the Penn Torque 40N shares most of the same parts save for the machined frame versus cast.

This reel performs exceptionally well and is an excellent value for the money. The drag is very smooth, the reel is nice looking and strongly built. Why would anyone spend $500 dollars or more for a two speed reel when these quality reels are available for half the price!

Fathom 2-speed reels are some of the best value reels on the market. I got a 30LD2 earlier this year and picked up this 40NLD2 as a bigger trolling reel. Penn has the heritage and track record for tough saltwater reels. Very happy with them. Wish they would move back production to USA.
