I bought this book for a class, but once I begin to read it, I actually came to like the story! I was surprised at the fact that even though there were some serious and tragic issues that the Fullers had to deal with in the book, there were also a lot of times in which there were some comical moments as well. The historical information about what was going on in Kenya at that time was also fascinating. It was a pretty good read and if you have heard of/read "White Teeth" by Zadie Smith and liked it, you will probably like this one as well. I found that it reminded me of that book a lot with some of its subjects and comedy.
I always finish books, even if I’m not thrilled with them I figure they might get better. I could not do that with this. There were a few good places in it but nothing that I was enthralled with. Good reading if you want to go to sleep is the nicest thing I can say. I’m sorry, I really wanted to like it!

This was a discussion group pick. Easy read, but I found it disturbing. Children put in dangerous situations is always questionable. Alcohlic mother who can't function in a safe country. Unspeakable conditions to raise a child. A bit like the Poison Wood book.
A great read...I couldn't put this book down. Its hard to imagine that this is the true story of the author's childhood and not an imaginative work of fiction. An insightful look at the lives of white Africans during the close of minority rule in Rhodesia. A wonderful story.
It is not in ‘good’ condition. It has 3 different colored highlighting all throughout it with notes, too. I would rate the condition ‘poor’ to ‘fair’
