Interesting read of the history, life, and environmental passion of the author and area.

I have lived in the deep south for 15 years (in a metro area) and have no understanding of rural southern life. The book revealed some of the mores and motivations of the indigenous people. The book's bonus was the ecology lessons. My son went to school near the setting and works as an environmental education coordinator for a Florida state park with similar ecological challenges. He loves his "prescribed burns." After reading about the plight of the long leaf forest, I have a better appreciation for the work he does.
You need not be an environmentalist to love this book. But if you are not an environmentalist, you will be by the end.

A great book by a wonderful southern writer. I hope that Ms. Ray will write some more soon. It is a wonderful insight into the lifestyle of people that were born in the South, left and have come back to make their homes in the Deep South. I hope she enjoyed her time teaching at the University of Mississippi.
