Unusual, excellent movie about a 1960s soul music band put together in the 1990s by a young local in Ireland, and the working-class band's ups and downs, along with his own personal travails. The band has more than 10 members, incl. 3 pretty female backup singers (2 of whom occasionally sing lead), so various subplots and tensions play out. Extremely entertaining, constantly funny, and if it weren't for the unnecessarily persistent use of foul language and a gratuitous sex scene (where no nudity was shown), this would be a great movie for the entire family. Very funny, quite enjoyable, very musical, keeps your interest the entire time, and lots of great 1960s American soul music is played throughout by some very talented people. This is the definitive version of the DVD to purchase, and I own several different versions. This one shows the movie in anamorphic widescreen (unlike some other versions in 4x3), and has been remastered to have an extremely sharp picture, yes, even on a high-definition TV. The Blu-ray is about to be released, and I'm curious if they can get the picture quality appreciably better than is seen here, because this is really an excellent picture for DVD, even on a high-definition TV set, which ordinarily makes DVDs look pretty mediocre. This 2-disc set has the most extras available for any DVD version of this movie (it has 2 or 3 on the making of the film), and is the definitive DVD version.Read full review

Do you like R&B... Soul...Blues music? Then you will probably enjoy "The Commitments". Based on a true story about a group of underprivilaged Irish kids from the ghettos of Dublin forming a band to play the music of the oppressed ....SOUL! They are a rag tag bunch who have grown up believing that drinking and fighting is the normal way of life. Against tough odds, they get their band together and play some great music. Their story is very entertaining with dynamic interactions between band members. I don't want to reveal how it all works out, but, the music alone is worth the price. As an added bonus, the band made two CD's based on the movie soundtrack. After watching the move, I had to get the CD's.
I saw this movie when it first came out and loved it. I told a friend who was a member of a famous group in the sixties. We were discussing feuds and romances within the group. I told him he would love this movie due to similar experiences and because it’s funny and the music is so good. I also wanted to own it. These days, there are not too many movies that are feel good movies that have substance. I’ll watch it over and over.

If you own another release of this movie, throw it away. This is the only release in widescreen with 5.1 surround sound. You can't get any better. Disc 2 is loaded with extras. Buy it. You won't regret the purchase.

Have always loved the music...really enjoyed the special features. I had the opportunity to see the band in Washington state, but ended up not going. Really regret this.
