This is the second book that I have bought. I gave the first one to a friend who loves making desserts and is a terrific baker. She was very impressed and many of the recipes have become family favorites. She has shared the some of the recipe with her granddaughter and niece to encourage them to cook as the recipes are not complicated even for beginners. I have always admired Paula Deen and enjoyed her cooking shows on the food network. I am keeping this book for myself. One of my family's favorite recipes is Not Yo' Mama's Banana Pudding. I had a hard time finding the instant French Vanilla Pudding and the Pepperidge Farm Chessmen cookies are a little more expensive than vanilla wafers. However, it was well worth the extra effort and expense! The majority of the recipes are easy and the ingredients are ones that you normally have in your pantry. The cover with the picture of Paula and her sons just brings a smile to your face as they radiate such love and joy. I also like the way the book is designed and the layout. The smaller spiral bound size is much easier to manage for someone who has arthritic fingers like I do.Read full review
I bought Paula Deen's Just Desserts Cookbook, because I'd watched her television show. The book really follows along closely to her teaching skill. It's small, and doesnt take up alot of room on your counter, making it more likely to be used. The ingredents are staples, that can be bought in bulk, and really the variation she has for them amaze me. Nature refined. I love the way she incorporates nature, and her love of Savannah into her book. You get a real flavor of southern living. She's Humble, and the spiral binding, is evident of that. I love the stories that go along with some of the recipes, and the directions are so clear. I also like the cooking tips, and measurements in the front of the book, and the easy to find index, Mrs. Deen has outdid herself. I hope to collect them all.
I am a Southern cook, so Paula Deen is a star at our house! I don't buy very many cookbooks, but the price I paid for this one was such a deal, I couldn't pass it up. This cookbook offers recipes for desserts for every occasion--potluck, parties, family dinners, just because you want something sweet, and for the holidays. There's also two pages on Gooey Butter Cakes, which is probably one of the most fantastic desserts I've ever eaten or prepared. Some of her more traditional recipes differ from mine, and I've even made some of these following her recipe and like them better. Some of the less familiar recipes (for me) are Wilkes-Barre Cream Cheese Cake, Georgia Cracker Pie, Sean Jones Sweet Potato Pie (made w/ cream cheese!), Green Tomato Pie and Grape Nuts Pudding. But most of the recipes are familiar, (like any other good Southern dessert cookbook, there's Paula's recipes for Red Velvet Cake or Pralines) and I can't wait to try them all. This book also contains hints from Paula and little tidbits from Jamie and Bobby as well. It's fun to read as much as it is to get recipes from. And, if you're not from the South, these recipes will make you want to grab a glass of iced tea and a bottle of mosquito spray and come one down!Read full review
Whether you want a simple 'family dinner' dessert, or something more elaborate that will show off your culinary skills, Paula Deen has done it again! I love her cookbooks, and am an AVID FAN!! Almost all of her recipes have things that you will have on hand in YOUR kitchen! If you have measuring cups, spoons, a sifter and a mixer you can whip up anything in this book! Her coconut cake is TO DIE FOR, but do let it sit in the fridge for 3 days. Day one it was good, day two, better, but OH on day three was it DELICIOUS!! A big hit with all who have eaten it! I bought this book, and a friend loved it so much, that I am getting her one too! This is a great dessert book, even for those of us who have cooked and baked for years. Page after page will renew your excitement about baking! Buy it, then kick back and enjoy the results!! Whether you're on a budget or not, this book is the book for your next dessert.Read full review
I decided to buy this because I've had so many friends just rave about Paula's books & I love her show...I asked several for a recommendation of which one I should start with, & they all said that they enjoyed all her books, this one included & I couldn't go wrong. I have read the cookbook & the recipes look wonderful. I additionally truly enjoyed the comments & stories she included. But I HAVE NOT YET MADE ANYTHING FROM IT...so my review is to be taken with "a grain of salt", as I can really only pass on several friend's recommendations. So my expectations & hopes are high!
