Right from Track 1 - Wrists of Kings, the Album starts of with a great drum progression. For those of you that are already ISIS fans you will notice the immediate increase of cleaner riffs as compared to Celestial or Oceanic. Some my argue that ISIS is getting soft, but to me they are simply growing, evolving, and progressing. Those heavy riffs are definitely there and are just as awesome, there is just more of a variety of them as well as complexity woven in their songs now as compared to the 2 previously mention albums This album picks up right where Panopticon left off. The singles off this album, Holy Tears and Not in Rivers but in Drops, are ones that will catch your ear from the start, however, the originality of Dulcinea and Garden of light emit this newer ISIS we began to see in Panopticon. Oceanic was fantastic, heavy, very sludge, very Doom, and In Absence embraces both sides of the spectrum now, starting with clean riffs then building to heavy ones, following more of a progressive post rock/metal feel. Overall, this album ranks number one in my book for ISIS albums, although I can see early ISIS fans being disappointed that they didn't follow their original roots, personally I am digging it. With hits like Holy Tears and Not in Rivers, and beautiful pieces such as Garden of Light, Dulcinea, and Firdous E Bareen, this album captures the full potential of what ISIS has become.Read full review
