The traditional Japanese geisha have been admired for centuries for their beauty and femininity. The 2006 Maiko Barbie captures these qualities perfectly and has left out none of the important details. Introduced by Mattel as one of its Barbie Dolls of the World collection, the Maiko Barbie retains all of the hallmark traits expected from a traditional geisha. It also displays the quality and beauty that has come to be expected when you hear the words Barbie doll. Its classic features include an ornate kimono, culturally appropriate hair and makeup, and the regal style that is the trademark of this unique historical figure. This beautiful doll is intended for people aged 10 years and up.The 2006 Maiko Barbie doll is a magnificent display piece that easily fits into the collections for both Barbie dolls collectors and collectors of pieces of historical Japanese culture. The delicate display of detail in the doll and her elegant costume make her one of the most stunning dolls in the Dolls of the World collection and an item that will be treasured for years. The Maiko Barbie doll comes in her own durable and lovely display case to help her remain in pristine condition. The case is designed to look like a traditional Japanese home and provides a lovely backdrop for this classic Barbie doll. The wardrobe includes an exquisite ornate obi sash that is tied in the back. Her kimono is long and has wide, flowing sleeves. Dotted with a lovely floral pattern, it is silky and luxurious. The Barbie doll carries a delicate pink and gold paper parasol that is decorated with cherry blossoms. On her feet, she dons white socks and platform sandals. Because of the strict cultural codes of the time of the geisha, she is seen wearing one of the few approved hairstyles. The traditional Shimada hairstyle keeps her beautiful, dark hair swept back from her face and neatly bound into a bun at the top of her head. The hair is finished with traditional kanzashi pins, gold tassels, and vibrant flowers. The doll has a heavily painted white face that helps to highlight her ruby red lips and piercing dark eyes. Maiko translates into English as "dancing child," and it is one of the steps a woman was required to take before reaching her final status. During a five-year apprenticeship, the maiko must learn how to follow all of the strict codes for appearance and behavior as is required of one of these revered women. This Barbie doll captures the allure of this culturally significant part of Japan's history and allows its collectors to display the wonder and feminine beauty of these famous ladies. The Maiko Barbie's pose is adjustable, and the arms can be raised and lowered. The Barbie can also bend at the waist. Her parasol opens and closes, and it can be held in either hand.
