This movie marks the first appearance of the Care Bears in a feature film since 1987's The Care Bears Adventure in Wonderland. The movie (and all Care Bears movies since) only features the Care Bears, not the Care Bear Cousins, and also introduces many new characters from a land known as Joke-a-lot.Funshine Bear loves jokes and enjoys making the Care Bears laugh. One day however, Funshine tries to cheer up Grumpy Bear (after his newly built rainbow carousel breaks apart) by telling jokes, which only makes Grumpy feel worse. Grumpy even goes so far as to tell Funshine that if he doesn't understand that cheering up is not making fun of, then Funshine does not belong in Care-A Lot. So Funshine runs away and ends up in Joke-a-lot, where a rat named Sir Funnybone declares him to be the long-lost King of that place. What he doesn't know, though, is that Funnybone is actually using him as part of a plot to gain power. The other Care Bears, of course, miss Funshine and want him to come back to Care-A-Lot where he belongs. Thus Funshine must in the end make a very difficult decision; to come back to his home in Care-A-Lot or remain king of Joke-A-Lot and no longer live with his fellow Care Bears.Read full review
I like the values that the 2 CGI Care Bear movies (Journey to Joke-a-Lot and Big Wish) have. Nobody's trying to kill anyone, nobody's truly evil (even the villian in this one turns out to be a decent guy) and nothing is too scary for a 2-year-old. (I wish I could say the same about the current and past Care bears TV shows, which my daughter is not allowed to watch.) The Joke-a-lot national anthem is annoying, but other than that, I have no complaints about this movie. It shows good values of friendship, apologizing when you've hurt someone else's feelings and that caring about others is more important than having fun (especially laughing at someone when they need your help). I would recommend this movie and the Big Wish Movie (I think I like Big Wish better, but this one's not bad).
Pros: Great for young children. Adventures with-out villians. Cons: Not so great for parents, quite repeditive singing, gets annoying after a few times of hearing it. Also they changed a few of the bears colors. Funshine bears journy to joke-a-lot, begins after picking on grumpy bear. Funshine gets his feelings hurt, and decides to run away. Great story for kids to learn why they shouldn't make fun of others. Also teaches them why running away is not the answer. WoW, they really are refacing the whole Care Bear image with this movie, they all use to be about helping kids. Ware were the kids in need? My daughter loves this one, alot... We have plenty of Care Bear movies, old and new. I enjoyed watching this one with her the first time, the computer animation is great. I would like to know what happened to the regular Care Bear cartoons. They seem to be doing every thing different. Even creating new bears, and changing the old ones.Read full review
Of course I remember the Care Bears from "back in the day". I grew up on them and was elated when they came back a few years ago. Now my daughter gets to enjoy the new and improved care bears! I have several of their dvds, and I prefer the newer-made ones to the older ones. I try to purchase ones made in 2005 or later. The older ones are good, but naturally the picture/character quality is lacking. Also, you have to love the care bear movies for their adorably cute original music.
The DVD is very cute and since it is a Carebears movie it helps to teach my kids about feelings. Different feelings, how to express them, and how to identify them. My kids may not know that they are learning, but when they repeat some of the things from the movie, us parents can see that they are. It keeps my 2 children entertained, aged 5 and 1 1/2. They love the music to it and the entertaining characters and silly things thrown into the mix for laughs. I decided to buy this movie because my kids are fans of the Carebears and we have seen previews for this DVD in particular on some of their other Carebears DVD's we have at home. I would find myself singing the Joke-a-Lot song before we even bought the DVD, just from hearing it in previews!
