I'd seen the movie many times, but don't remember actually reading the book until now. Just did it for a book club meeting, but boy am I glad I did. Such detail and character development is uncommon in books written in this decade - even in the one's I really like. Now the trend is to make every story part of a trilogy or a lengthy series. This book was like having several books in a series put together. It's a real insight into not just a period of time but of human nature itself including the good, the bad, and the ugly. (Sorry wrong genre but it still fits!) The paperback was in great shape to have been from 1976, and didn't require any downloads, special software, or updates. Just open the pages and connect to brain via biological optical devices - (eyes!)
Good story. Not historically accurate, but worth reading as long as you understand it's fiction.

Hi I was hoping this book had a book jacket...It is hard to tell in the picture exactly what is going on. Book was in good shape but had no jacket.

I have read this book over and over since I was a kid. Margaret Mitchell gives readers a perspective of the Civil war days that is totally different than what you would learn in school or from history books. Instead it is from the perspective of a young girl raised as a spoiled brat on a southern plantation who ends up caught up in the whole event and how she deals with the entire destruction of her way of life. It is also a love story of sorts.
