I actually bought this book for myself -- a 30-year-old mom of three. i have been crocheting a long time, but i want to teach myself to knit, and have had problems in the past with instructional books intended for adults. It's easier to focus on the points at hand to learn with the simple layout of the book, large pictures and fewer words used to describe the methods. I don't feel the pictures are the best -- to simplify them, they're like drawn diagrams, and I don't quite find them clear enough to eliminate all the struggles of understanding the author's instructions. But combined with the written directions, it can be picked up, and I'm finding it more fun, and less intimidating, than with books intended to teach adults. For a child learning to knit, I wouldn't recommend the book for one younger than nine unless someone would be able to help him or her with support interpreting the text. In a nutshell, i dislike the pictures--I feel they're not clear enough. I do, however, like the simplified instruction and the logical sequence of learning the steps to knitting, and simple projects that are fun, and useful and will build the skill before moving on to the next lesson. I loved the pictures of children wearing up-to-date clothing items they made themselves, the inclusion of boys knitting in the photos, and the inherent lessons integrated to teach respect for natural fibers and their sources. My children have an interest in learning the fiber arts they see me working, and I plan to use this book to teach my two sons and my daughter to knit when they're ready. This book will prove a useful tool in teaching me, and teaching them.Read full review
I have been knitting for a few weeks, and was looking for something to help me, as well as my 5 year old daughter. This book, although aimed at a younger audience, was not childish. I think it would be perfect for the young knitter, say 10 years old, but had tips and things in it for me, as well. Much better than instructions that have come with my "kits". Great pictures, several projects, and explanations that just make sense. A nice addition to my craft library.
Very kid friendly knitting book. Colorful, easy to follow illustrations, nice projects. Directions for bean bags, puppets, pocket scarf and hat set, tassels, afghan, tote, dolls, spiral tube socks, sweater, , backpack, purse and wallet. Explains tools needed, casting on, binding off, knit stitch, purl stitch, decreasing, increasing, spool knitting, finger knitting, dying wool yarn with kool-aid, garter, stockinette stitch, ribbing, knitting in the round, making i-cord, seed stitch, cables, and basketweave.
This book is great for kids and adults alike. The instructions are very clear and the accompanying illiustrations are great. My daughter and I both have been enjoying the wide variety of projects. The projects are interesting and varied in difficulty. This is my favorite basic knitting book by far! I wish there was a second book with more projects!
Easy to understand instructions made learning to knit very easy and opened the door to wanting to learn a new skill and teach my children. I figured I needed to learn if I was going to teach them... now I am hooked. Right price here on ebay!
