Having only recently got into Nick Cave's music, my main referencing would have been to his earlier work, and nothing later than the 1995 murder ballads album, but recently i aquired Nocturama and now this. Abbatoir blues (disk one) is a mainly gospel inspired album, embellished with those wonderful things that make Nick Unique as a songwriter. The change in style is useful in overcoming the hindrance of one of the key band members having left, guitarist and side vocalist Blixa Bargeld. My favourite songs on the disk are Hiding all the way, which is probably the most gospel one also, as well as Let the Bells ring and There she goes my beautiful world. The Lyre of Orpheus (disk 2), on the other hand, has an odd feeling to it, as if it is misplaced. The beginning tracks have a folksey natural feeling to them that is a nice addtion to the roster, though some of the latter tracks mimic the style of the first disc somewhat. Most noted for me on this disk are the first and last tracks, The Lyre of Orpheus and O children, two polar opposites. Whilst Lyre has elements of folk music in it, O children brings Cave back into the hey day of his earlier work, similar in style to the songs on Let Love in. In all, i would give this 9/10, as it is a good album and marks the next stage in Cave's career, but not without a few mishaps along the way. Abbatoir Blues is a stronger album than the Lyre of Orpheus but they accompany eachother quite wellRead full review
I am a huge Nick Cave fan and often search on eBay for any related items. My CD collection is largely complete bar a few of his early albums, and, at the time, Abattoir Blues. When I saw this CD, the image in the advert was good, the CD detail was good and so I put a bid in and was lucky enough to win it a day or so later. The CD was very well packed and looks and plays like new, and is in great company with my other Nick Cave CD's. I was delighted to know that I knew most of the songs and was absolutely made up to hear quite a few of these tracks performed live at Glastonbury Festival. The album is truely Nick Cave, seductive, rich, beautiful, obscure and melodic. The man is a genius, and in my opinion the greatest artist of our time.
