BACK OF BOOK SAYS: KIT BUTLER is cool, dangerous, one of london's most infamous bachelors marriage is the last thing on his mind. but kit's family has other plans.desperate to thwart his father's matchmaking kit needs a bride fast. etner miss edgeworth... a year after being abandoned at the altar. lauren has determined that marriage is not for her. whent hese two fiercely independent souls meet, sparks fly and a deal is hatched. lauren will masquerade as kit's intended if he agrees to provide a passionate adventurous unforgetable summer. when the summer ends, she will break of fthe engagement rendering herself unmarriageable and leaving those both free. everything is working perfectly until they both fall in love for real. having just read julia quinn's ten things i like about you. i'm in a listing mood............. so the reasons why i liked a summer to remember by mary balogh 1. they meet very early in the book. (want to make a note of other books that do this exact situation) 2. they like each other from the start. 3. they have constant contact, (some books characters can go weeks/chapters w/out seeing each other) 4. he actually tells her about the wager EARLY IN THE BOOK AROUND PAGE 90 5. A NEGATIVE: pretend engagement. i making note of it here, because i want to make a list of regency books where this occurs. 6. handicapped brother - very good background here. 5. in regards to number one and the fight in the park, want to make note of this here, because i know i've seen it before,.... 6. wife back from dead,,,,,,,,,, i know i've seen this before too. 7. they actually kiss around 126 8. he teaches her to swim. 9, the characters all of them have much depth...... 10. their was a book recently that i read where the pretend bride, kept bringing up the point that they were pretend. that does NOT happen here. 11. they actually make love twice and not at the end. around 230..... 12. a negative and i guess to add a bit of DRAMA, and heart break, was that the BRIDE actually breaks up with him, with out a really good reason and he lets her. before deciding he can't live with out her and actually declares his love. it was good warms the heart. oh and one more thing, the wandering around in the middle, did not feel like that because the characters that were introduced had such depth and background that the story was kept moving. and several of these characters will have their own book soon. next book in series is slightly married- aidans storyRead full review
This is one of Ms. Balogh's older romances that I read several years ago, but it is just as good, if not better, then some that are more current. An excellent read! Kit Butler inherited the title of Viscount Ravensberg after the untimely death of his brother.. Kit's exploits in London are scandalous and his family orders him home to take on the responsibility of the Earldom and to also marry a bride his father has chosen for him so that there shall be heirs. Kit, who has been estranged from his family for sometime now, refuses his father's choice for a bride and sets off to find one of his own. He knows his family will think he'll pick someone totally unsuitable, but first he plans to do the opposite and find the perfect lady, stay engaged for a while and then break it off and then pick a woman more to his taste. Lauren Edgeworth has devoted her whole life to perfecting the art of being a lady. She loves routine in her life and to Kit she seems a total bore.....the perfect wife! Lauren agrees to be his fiancee and go along with the farce until Kit can find a bride of his own choosing. In exchange for all this, Lauren wants Kit to give her a summer she can keep in her memories always. He agrees knowing at the end of the summer he will break the engagement and Lauren will move to Bath where she will begin her life as a respectable spinster. Things never work out as we plan. Kit was not prepared for the other side of Lauren that he can see behind her properness.... the warm, giving woman who delights him in just her smile. Kit can't resist a challenge and he is determined to melt the icy exterior that he knows is just a front. In the process he finds that he is falling in love with Lauren and maybe has gone too far. Lauren is not aware of Kit's true feelings just yet, and still is making her plans to leave for Bath at the end of summer. If you read "One Night for Love" you will remember that Lauren's wedding was scandalously canceled so this all works in perfectly with her plans for spinsterhood since she is quite sure she can never love again. Never say never...she soon finds herself falling deeply in love with Kit. Ms.Balogh has outdone herself with the characters in this book. They were perfect for each other from the moment they met. It is well written with charming dialogue a a touch of sharp wit. The pacing of the relationship between Lauren and Kit is the way it should be in any romance novel....steady and slow. As I said....it is an older book, but well worth the read. I'd suggest Lauren's story first..."One Night For Love." You'll understand more about her and why she played the part of the ice queen in the beginning.Read full review
Mary Balogh did a wonderful job of introducing interesting and lively characters. In succeeding books each tells their own story. I really enjoyed this series, living vicariously through these characters.
Loved the story telling method of author and enjoyed going back and seeing where character's from the Slightly serie's were introduced. Bought it because it was the book that introduced the seven book slightly series.
Book arrived promptly, I bought the whole series. I enjoyed them very much and today I finished the last one
