I heard a lot of talk about this show, in fact it was A LOT of talk. Having never seen the show or been a fan of most adult based cartoons, i wasn't expecting much. I asked a few people about the show and got some opinions. I liked what i heard and ended up buying it. I really like this show. It has a great sense of adult humor and well developed characters and stories. It has quite a wide range of character personalities which keeps it interesting. There's the old grandpa who believes in physical punishment and wants to escape the urban society, the older grandson who is clever and realistic and always looks at things on a wide scale, and the younger grandson who is cocky and brings the element of humor. You can't forget the old black man who believes black people are a waste to society and the rich old business man who is set on making a quick dollar. The DVD itself has about 15 episodes if i remember correctly. It is spread through 3 DVDs which still has me confused why. There isn't much for extras. There are a few episodes where you can watch video and audio commentary while watching the show simultaneously. There are also a few interviews, but nothing amazing. If you're looking for a show with clever humor, and a wide variety of plots that actually focus on some real life events, i highly recommend this DVD. If you watch for it on Adult Swim you could probably find an episode or two to really get a feel for what you're buying.Read full review
“Jesus is black, Ronald Reagan is the devil, and the government is lying to you about 9/11.” The controversial, but funny, series that was a hit on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim makes it onto DVD in this uncut and uncensored set. I’ll have to admit that I’ve never seen the Boondocks on Cartoon Network. So I’m not sure exactly how censored they are on there, but I can imagine that it’s quite a lot. I have a vague familiarity with the comic strip and know that it’s a controversial one. Strip creator Aaron McGruder decided to bring his strip to television with all the controversy intact, no softening here. The shows is not afraid to use the “N” word, throw a chicken leg at Rosa Parks, or have one of its funniest characters be the black man who hates blacks. Granddad Robert Freeman (voiced by John Witherspoon) becomes legal guardians of his two grandsons, Huey and Riley (both voiced by Regina King). Huey is a miniature leftist revolutionary and Riley is a mini-gangsta. Granddad decides to move from the tough south side of Chicago to the lily white, upscale suburb of Woodcrest. Tom Dubois (Cedric Yarbrough) is a their light skinned black District Attorney neighbor whose married to a white woman and has a half and half daughter Jazmine (Gabby Soleil). They’re also visited by the hilarious Uncle Ruckus (Gary Anthony Williams) who is a black man who wishes for the days of Jim Crow to return since he hates his own race.Read full review
The Boondocks - The Complete First Season (2006, DVD) Where to begin! This series is like Dave Chapelle, The Family Guy and Malcom X all rolled into one. The Boondocks touch on day to day issues but with a reverse approach to lure your unconscious side. I mean, The way they attack todays social and political topics is clever. For instance Uncle Rucker this guy glorifies everything that the caucasian man has ever done or took credit for. In his quest to be accepted as a caucasian he devotes his life to riding himself of his own ethnic heritage thus reflecting what many African americans unconsciously do everyday. We lose ourselves trying to assimilate other ethnic groups. Hell the storylines are just funny as Hell too! Not to condone stereotyping but this series has a lot of factual based content again, with a clever approach that makes you see things in a perspective you might not necessarily notice otherwise.Read full review
The Boondocks ranks up there with the Dave Chappelle Show for political and cultural awareness. The Boondocks tracks the adventures of two African American boys, Riley and Huey Freeman, who experience a culture clash when they move from southside Chicago to the "boondocks", the suburbs to live with their grandfather. This show is not for everyone, but if you have a sense of humor you will love the show and the little jabs it takes a pop culture, the political structure and race relations. Some memorable quotes from the show include: Huey: Operation Black Steel, the mission to liberate Shabazz K. Milton Burrow, was aborted...because I couldn't get a ride. Riley: Grandad, can you take us into the city tomorrow to watch the R. Kelly trial? Grandad: Hell no, but you can walk. Riley: It's 40 miles! Grandad: All the money I spent on them da*n Nikes, you better just do it. Huey: Who is this? Tom: HUEY, I got ARRESTED! They say I fit the description. I think it's cause I'm black, Huey! You have to get me out of here, Huey. You don't wanna know what they'll do to me in jail! Huey: They'll rape you. That's what they're gonna do. But you're not in jail, you're in holding. And I don't think people usually get raped in holding. Hold on. GRANDAD, do people get raped in holding? Tom: Stop! Stop! Stop! I don't want your Grandad to know! I don't want anybody to know! Listen, they can't keep people in holding over the weekend. At 9 o' clock tonight, they're gonna put me on a bus and send me to real jail. REAL JAIL! Earliest I could get out would be on Monday! Huey: Well, it's just the weekend. Tom: It only takes one night to get anally raped! Huey: You know what? All of y'all are fired! Get out. Kid: What? Aww c'mon Huey: Did I stutter?! (Kids groan and then look to Quincy Jones for help) Quincy Jones: Don't look at me... Huey: Don't look at Quincy Jones, Quincy Jones ain't gonna help you! Get your a**es out. NOW!Read full review
Warning - this is not for the those without a sense of humor. Now that we're past that part - this is a MUST have set of DVD's. I regret not knowing about this any sooner, as I found myself first watching mini-clips on Youtube, then eventually falling in love with this series. This show has quite the history outside of the racial boundaries it tends to cross (frequently, I might add). Being kicked off of BET at one point; it was an easy decision for Cartoon Network (Adult Swim) to take this on to make sure it was seen by as many people as possible. Did I mention Samuel L. Jackson; Charlie Murphy; Mike Epps; John Witherspoon (father from the movie Friday) and so many more voice the sheer talent that is The Boondocks. I'd suggest watching a few clips for yourself. I fell in love at first sight - I know you will, too!Read full review
