Classic Truffault cult film based on Ray Bradbury's 1953 book. This is an intelligent, thought provoking film that has become even more relevant today than when it was made in 1966. Although it differs in some ways from the book, this film version is a lot more faithful to it than the newer version. The film presents life in a society totally controlled by the government in which firemen, instead of fighting fires, have been sent out to burn all books in order to keep people from reading, encountering new ideas and thinking, which could result in political unrest and revolution. Mindless entertainment is provided by interactive wall units and citizens have become obedient, mindless, selfish and ignorant. Then the protagonist, Montag, a fireman, reads a book...

Very good movie. Brings the book to life. If you want to watch costumed action heroes then this movie probably isn’t for you.

I used this film in a 9th grade high school English class upon completion of the book. The students in my class greatly enjoyed the book but were largely disappointed with the film. There are major deviations from the book in characters (a 16-year-old girl becomes a grown school teacher and Faber does not exist) and setting (the train rides are quiet and peaceful instead of full of blaring commercials). Because of either production-related limitations or carelessness, many powerful details disappear from the story (the cars drive at average speeds and there is no reference to the violent nature of the society). However, I thought the film's depiction of the "Book People" society was very well done. I found it worthwhile to show in class because it stimulated conversation about how the students imagined the story and also increased the students' appreciation of the book.Read full review
Wonderful movie, enjoyed more 2nd time around. Newbies can't compete with the older movies! Had almost forgotten about this movie until recently saw some comments in a magazine re hard copy books becoming obsolete now that we're moving into the digital age with our e-books. Nothing like holding a good old book in one's hands. At least we'll have the DVD's around for a long time so we'll be able to remember the book itself. Actual "reading" of a book lends much more to the imagination than just viewing the DVD but, DVDs appeal more to the lazies. (me too)
