This is a cute movie. It is not excellent blow you away animation but it is clever and has funny lines. The cast includes George Carlin as the wizard who leaves to play golf in Scotland and Andy Dick as his sidekick left to make sure the scales of justice in Fairytale Land go as planned. All is well the night of Cinderella's Ball until Sigourney Weaver as the wicked stepmother reads the fairy ending and creates Happily Never After. She recruits all the evil characters to trash the plans. As a result, Cinderella--or Ella as she's called, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar, realizes Prince Charming is boring and she wants more out of life. She falls for a character played by Freddie Prinze Jr. The moral is refreshing in that there's more to life than mediocrity. Maybe kids get that and maybe they don't but they sure laugh along the way. Most os the laughs come from Andy Dick's character--he does a lot for the movie. It is a good one to rent--or even buy for a quick resale. If this was helpful, please vote yes. If it was not and you feel you have to vote no--please e-mail and let me know why. The premise, that fairy tales are fated to always end happily but that this can be altered, is a good one. Ella's (Cinderella) awakening to the possibilities of choices in life is an interesting twist, but the rest of the characters are exaggerated buffoons (like the Wolves from Little Red Riding Hood and The 3 Little Pigs), ranting shrews (Sigourney Weaver as Cinderella's Wicked Stepmother) or babbling little sidekicks (Andy Dick and Wallace Shawn as Mambo and Munk). Patrick Warburton's turn as Prince Humperdink recalls his roll as Kronk in The Emperor's New Groove. The name reference reminds us of the hysterical Princess Bride, but the character bears no resemblance nor provides any of the humor of those 2 classic characters. Most importantly, my kids were bored and even those who managed to sit through the whole movie gave it a big ho-hum....Read full review
I pretty much take my 5 year old to any animated movie that comes out and this is one of the first one that couldn't hold his attention all the way through. I don't remember him laughing out loud once and the adults in the audience certainly didn't. Children and adults were constantly streaming in and out of the theater. The voices are a collection of D listers. George Carlin's part is too small to make much of a difference and Sigourney Weaver didn't do much with her role. It is impossible to care about any of the characters and the whole thing is just a failed mashup of styles and stories. Don't waste your time on this movie. Shrek the Third is on the way!
I bought this DVD for a 5 year old girl because we both thought the trailer looked very funny. Don't get me wrong, she likes the movie, but it's not as sharp as Shrek, and drags a little for adult and child alike. There are some highlights (seen in the trailer) that still deliver in the movie itself, but there are lulls and areas in the story that are maybe even a little too subtle for their own good. To its credit, those subtle areas have their own charm upon second viewing and the 5 year old in question is not complaining about the movie like this reviewer. I recommend this movie, but don't expect to be dazzled. Amused, yes, but dazzled no. Not to mention, I've never stayed away from a movie that I thought I might enjoy just because of what a reviewer said or didn't say. Happy viewing.Read full review
The movies character are all so cute.It has many celebrity voices for the characters. It did put a new twist to the Happily Ever After story, but it jumped around and wasn't as funny as I had hoped it would be.It has some great animation, I think the younger children would like this movie better than the older children.Does have a good moral to the story of this movie that you decide you own fate, by your own choices and decisions.I decided to buy the movie really beacuse of the cover. It had so many characters on the front that I thought for sure it would be hilarious, and also that there were the celebrity voices, I thought it would be a sure hit.Sometimes the covers are better than the movies.
