This is an extremely touching movie about a mentally retarded girl trying to come of age with an extraordinarily overbearing mother (Diane Keaton). The girl is from a wealthy family whose mother tries to keep up appearances. Like her older sisters, the girl longs to be independent. She wants to go to college, get a boyfriend, and have her own apartment. When she meets the boy of her dreams, her mother is less than thrilled to learn he is mentally retarded as well. She insists that her daughter can "do better", unable accept the fact that her daughter will never quite be what she had hoped. The movie is touching and hilarious in parts. Giovanni Ribisi does an excellent job playing the boyfriend who is obsessed with marching band music. Although I find Juliette Lewis extremely annoying in nearly ALL of her other movies, her character is so different here (no whiny, southern drawl) that she is entirely convincing in the role. A great film that many can appreciate, especially families with older children.Read full review
I worked with people who are mentally and physically handicapped and I truly miss all "my" ladies. They were a 2nd family to me...point being: even "they" need and crave love and a life to live!!
