Death Dealer by Rudolph Hoess is a necessary book for students of Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. I learned Hoess from Laurence Rees's excellent BBC production of Auschwitz: The Nazis and the Final Solution wherein an actor portraying Hoess delivered voice-over narration in the form of excerpts from this memoir. His flat, dispassionate tone led me to seek out this book where the tone of the excerpts is true to the tone of his book. Hoess is a brute in a uniform. Despite his declamations or reformed thought, he is a nonetheless a brute. His admission that it was wrong to kill the Jews may be sincere, but in light of the rest of his story it comes across as now saying the right thing. In his final thoughts, he declares he is still a National Socialist. This edition includes his memoir written while imprisoned and awaiting trial and execution, and supplementary material consisting of: last letters to family, the minutes of the Wannsee Conference, an overview of leading Nazis, and more. Everyone should know and always remember the details of this psychotic episode in human history, though, of course, it is a saddening and depressing read.Read full review

Written from a perspective that we don’t often get to see. It’s not the usual and repetitive “Evil Nazi” story that’s been written and re-written over and over again.

Chilling that the narrative is a first-hand account from a concentration camp commander.
