Hugo Young is clearly no fan of Margaret Thatcher. That is evident in every chapter of his book as he tries to paint Thatcherism in the worst possible light. By doing so, he makes allegations and claims that are mostly bunk, and/or logical fallacies. For example, he claims that during Margaret Thatcher's premiership, Britain's economy was operating at 80 percent capacity. In making that claim, Young fails to mention that Britain had been faring far worse economically before Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister. In addition, he claims that Margaret Thatcher was to blame for the double-digit unemployment that dogged her Premiership. He fails to mention that under Margaret Thatcher's Premiership, Britain was transforming itself from being a heavy-industry economy to a service/information economy, much like the United States and the high unemployment was largely structural and beyond the control of even Margaret Thatcher. I give this book a rating of 3/5 because any book on Margaret Thatcher makes for interesting reading, but Hugo Young trashes one of the greatest leaders of all time with skewed information and leaves out important information, simply because it does not support his theses. Reading Hugo Young's biography of Margaret Thatcher would be like reading a biography of Abraham Lincoln that trashes his reputation for honesty and fairness and questions his role in freeing the slaves.Read full review
